About Tales2Film™ and Aisle Seat Books™

    Read a good movie lately?

Every good movie starts with a script, and every good script tells a riveting story. Long before the actors are chosen and the filming starts, a writer sits down, crafts that story, and submits it for consideration by the producers, directors, and other creative talents in the film industry. It can take a long time. A script may spend years making the rounds before getting the elusive Hollywood green light. If it ever does. Some of the greatest movies ever written are ones that none of us will ever see on the screen.

Tales2Film finds the best of those not-yet-produced tales and brings them to you as Movie Length Talesjust as the writer envisaged them. Each of the tales in this series has been converted by the script’s writer from the technical shorthand of screenplay format into the familiar prose format you see here, a process called novelization.

These little books are not novels, or even novellas. Think of them as written movies. Like the screenplays they come from, each is presented in real time, written in the present tense to allow you to see the movie’s scenes in your mind’s eye as if they were unfolding on a theater’s screen before you.

So. Here’s a movie. Take your favorite aisle seat and enjoy it.

    Theater lights dim.

    Fade in:

A lush New England valley bordered on all sides by a dense green forest.

An on-screen title: A Few Miles Outside of Salem, Massachusetts—1692.

Approximately 15 single-storied homes are spread out over one corner of this spacious valley. The rest of the area is divided into several large fields, each of which is neatly corrugated and planted. The crops appear to be incredibly healthy.

People mill about, some working, some speaking to each other.

Caleb Hampton leaves his place in one of the fields and makes his way toward the forest that surrounds the valley. Seventeen years old, this is a ruggedly handsome young man. His eyes are intelligent and kind, his smile contagious and warm—the kind of person both young and old like and respect. Caleb enters the dense forest and makes his way through the trees, searching for someone. Up ahead, he spots his prey.

Isabel Morrow, 17 years old, as sharp as she is beautiful, walks alone, completely at peace in the forest.

Caleb discreetly follows, careful not to give his presence away. He stops when Isabel does, a devilish smile on his face. He brings his right hand back as if he’s harnessing some invisible strength. He throws his arm forward.

The sound of a falling tree comes from the area he aims at.

Isabel turns, startled. The sound echoes through the forest and then fades, but no tree has fallen. Curious, Isabel walks in that direction.

Caleb follows. Once Isabel has stopped again, he makes the same gesture to her other side. A terrible lion roar fills the forest, immediately silencing the surrounding area.

Isabel is startled once again. A smile crosses her face as the normal forest sounds return. She continues walking forward.

Caleb hides behind a nearby tree. Stifling a laugh and waiting a few moments, he peers around. Isabel has vanished. Caleb moves forward, careful not to give himself away. He can’t spot Isabel anywhere. He listens for signs of her presence. Nothing. He runs a few steps to her last position but can’t find her. Worried now, he looks in all directions.

Isabel? he calls out to the forest.

Nothing. Just the chirping birds in the trees. Caleb runs forward, toward the edge of a gulch. Looking down, he scans the bottom of the gulch for her.

Isabel? Can you hear me? Isabel?! Caleb shouts… yet no one answers.

From somewhere above, Isabel lands just behind him. Looking for me?

Completely jarred, Caleb yells and falls to the ground. Surprised by his reaction, Isabel can’t help laughing.

Embarrassed, Caleb springs to his feet, brushing leaves from his clothes. What are you doing? he asks her, annoyed.

Isabel smiles. Giving you a taste of your own medicine.

What does that mean? Caleb shoots back. I thought you had fallen and hurt yourself. I was worried about you.

Was that before or after you tried to frighten me with silly noises? You’re incorrigible.

Caleb looks to her closely. I did scare you, though, didn’t I?

She refuses to give an inch. Not really.

Brows knitted, Caleb throws his arm forward. A terrible lion roar erupts right behind Isabel. She jumps into his arms.

How about that time? he slyly asks.

Not even a bit. I just like being near you, Caleb.

They’re so close they’re breathing the same air. Although pleasing, this intimacy is new for them… and uncomfortable. Caleb looks down, unable to hold Isabel’s intense gaze. I suppose this is one of those arguments where I win if I lose.

Isabel shoots him a knowing look. Smart boy. Although…

    What? he asks.

    You smell like horse manure.

Isabel starts to move away but Caleb grabs her and holds her tight against his chest. Then you should get closer. You love horses.

Caleb, let me go! Isabel implores as they play/wrestle with each other. She struggles to get free but Caleb holds on to her.

Nearby in the forest, a local teenage boy stalks a deer. He looks through the sights of his musket toward his prize—a gorgeous full-grown buck. Out of his peripheral vision, though, he senses movement and looks in that direction—he spots Caleb and Isabel wrestling in the distance. The teenage hunter looks to the buck, just out of shooting distance, and makes a decision. He lowers his musket and stealthily moves toward the couple.

Isabel manages to break free of Caleb’s grasp. She looks to him with a mixture of humor and disgust. Don’t be like that. You’re such a child.

And you’re so mature. You’re three weeks my senior. A smile crosses his lips. Besides, you’re the one who levitated.

Isabel walks further into the forest, toward the unseen teenage hunter, who ducks behind some brush. She admits, I shouldn’t have done that. It was irresponsible. If anyone had seen…

Following her, Caleb laughs: No one’s here. Besides, we should be free to do as we want.

Caleb, it’s forbidden. If one of our fathers had seen…

I’m not scared of my father or yours, either.

You should be, Isabel warns him. My father doesn’t particularly like you. He says you’re an evil child.

There’s that word again. We’re nearly eighteen. When are we allowed to do as we want? he asks seriously.

It’s not so simple. What we do affects the others, too. You know that.

I know that I’m one person. I shouldn’t have to be responsible for anyone else. When my father and yours were our age, they were out in the world, travelling the colonies. They were—

Isabel turns back to Caleb: I know the stories. The point is they came back and they never left. There’s a reason for that, Caleb.

Yes, they got old and boring.

Still hidden, the teenage hunter stifles a laugh.

Isabel’s eyes narrow: They got married and had children. Us.

Caleb won’t let the point go, though: You levitated. Now it’s my turn.

Panicked, Isabel takes a step toward him: No, it’s forbidden!

You should have thought of that before you did it, then.

Caleb concentrates and lifts both arms from his side. Amazingly,
