    A Badge and a Bully

    EMBER MCCALLAHAM WASN’T sure how she knew he was a werewolf. That he was in law enforcement was more obvious—the way he carried himself, the he kept his concealed carry free, his discreet observation of the shoplifter hanging out in the electronics section of the thrift store where she worked.

    He surreptitiously he studied the shoplifter for a few seconds longer than necessary, as if checking for something else, before he headed for men’s clothing. The policeman was there to shop, then, not for work, although her boss had been trying to get some plainclothes help.

    Mister Bawker was fair, reasonable even when he made demands, and Ember did what she could to help keep the workplace atmosphere pleasant. But there was only so much a college freshman could do, even if she wasn’t exactly human.

    Ember wasn’t sure that police used folks only a few years older than her as plainclothesmen, anyway.

    The werewolf-cop paused and glanced again towards the shoplifter while he perused the clothes. Ember’s position at the pricing station was designed to help her spot folks like the shoplifter, though her workload usually meant she couldn’t afford to do anything about it. She had to finish the current pile before closing, so she focused on doing the thorough but
