    Chapter 1

So what's the big news? Heather's mom asked leaning towards her. She and her mother looked more like sisters than parent and child. Both women had straight brown hair that flowed past their chin. They had matching brown eyes and skin that was medium toned with freckles over their noses.

I have no idea. He wouldn't tell me, Heather admitted. Her boyfriend of five years, Brady, had made reservations for his and her family to have dinner at a new Italian bistro.

The bistro was a cozy place that still smelled faintly of paint. The staff wore red uniform shirts with khaki pants. Their smiles were friendly and genuine.

There were perhaps twenty tables. They were seated at a quiet table in the back at Brady's request.

He had playfully refused to tell her anything about the reason for the dinner except that he had news to share with the family.

She secretly wondered if Brady had gotten the big promotion he had been vying for. He had been working as a marketing executive at Heidelberg Clothing Inc since they had met. He had big hopes for advancement but had not managed to climb the corporate ladder more than a rung since he was hired.

You are not pregnant are you? Heather's father asked looking at her sternly. Her father was in his late fifties with a receding hairline and sharp features. Heather had her father's thin lips and cleft chin.

No, Heather said resisting the urge to roll her eyes at him. He had been adamantly against her moving in with Brady four years before. In truth, Heather had made the decision to do so much more with her head then her heart. Her landlord had decided not to renew the lease on her apartment at the last minute due to his daughter needing a home after a messy divorce. Heather had been given only a month's notice to find a new place. She had shared her predicament with Brady and he had suggested she move in with him. They had been dating casually for about a year at the time and Heather decided that it wasn't unreasonable to move in and take their relationship to the next step. They had both just graduated from college and were both new in their career fields.

Overall, it had been a good move though the fact that she was living with Brady made her old fashioned father more than a bit nervous.

What is this all about? Brady's father asked as soon as they were seated. Brady's parents had been the last to arrive.

His parents were a bit older than Heather's. They were in their early sixties. They were one of those couples that had been together so long that they looked very much alike. Both were heavy set with double chins and salt and pepper hair.

I had wanted to wait until after dinner to do this. But... Brady reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black box. He opened the box towards Heather revealing a diamond ring.

Will you marry me? he asked.

Heather felt her hands go clammy and her heart race. Brady wanted to marry her. Marry her. As in, forever. Heather felt a sense of panic in the pit of her stomach.

About damn time, Brady's father said slapping his son on the back.

Oh how wonderful! Brady's mother said.

"I love weddings! We will get you two married and then maybe we can get
