A Preemie Parent's Survival Guide to the NICU - Megan Grandinetti

Introduction
Hi, my name is Megan and my daughter, Sofie, is an ex-26 weeker. For those of you new to the NICU, this is medical jargon for a preemie born at 26 weeks. Sofie came into the world weighing 1lb 11oz and measuring only 12 inches long. Born just before the third trimester’s beautifying and plumping stages, she arrived painfully thin with furled ears, a concave chest and one eye still fused shut.
When I look back at her photos, I have a hard time comprehending she is the same vivacious and healthy little girl I know today. To me, she is, and always will be, beautiful, but her preemie

self bare little resemblance.
Many things have changed in our lives from the time Sofie was born until today. One always hears that life will never be the same post-child, but having a preemie amplifies this to an extreme! I am grateful for every breath Sofie takes, her smiles, her laughs, and now, as she gets older, her babbles.
I knew in my heart our daughter would survive, but I had no comprehension of the journey she would take us on as she fought her hardest to survive. What follows is advice that I wish my husband and I would have received during our first weeks in the NICU. While everyone’s journey will be different, my hope in sharing the below is to help you better prepare and manage for these next few weeks and months ahead. What I’ve written is admittedly from my perspective as a mother, but I hope will help both moms and dads as you manage physically and emotionally over the next months.
Baby, Interrupted
At 25 weeks pregnant, I was diagnosed with early onset preeclampsia and was admitted to the hospital four days prior to giving birth. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine. Left untreated, it can cause your body to go into seizures and cause liver and kidney failure. If you
