    And Forever More

Discovering a creative talent late in life, Elizabeth Love’s first book was a collection of short stories. She carried on writing, and has published both fiction and non-fiction, covering her home and environment; about everyday life and experiences she has encountered on her journey through life. And Forever More is a continuation of Forever, the story of Jodie, a student of art and embroidery, trying to fulfil her mother’s ambition for her, whilst in the midst of courting Angus, an architect from Scotland.

    PART I

    Chapter 1

Matty was thirty years younger than her mother, give a month or two, and so by the time her own daughter – Jodie – was five, Mary, the grandmother, was almost seventy. Mary was still living in the same house on the outskirts of the city, but she’d been alone since John – her husband, and father of her two girls – died suddenly from a heart attack. She had been overcome with grief and a sense of loss for quite a long time, but then she had thought: being a youthful sixty-something, fit and able, just maybe there could be someone out there who would take her on? Stranger things had happened.

She supposed she was an incurable romantic at heart, but she flattered herself that even though fast-approaching the big seven-oh, she was still attractive and trim enough to have a certain ‘pulling power’. Her asset lay in a charismatic charm she used to engage in conversations, and she had an ease of manner when it came to getting on equitably with anyone she might come across. John, who had been eight years her senior, had thought she was ‘the tops’. He had described the colour of her hair in later years as having the steely-grey quality of water on a lake on a rainy day. It might be a dubious compliment, but she took it kindly. She prided herself on having nice hair, and she was careful to keep it in a stylish and well-groomed condition. Hair the colour of steel was less ageing than if it had been white.

Mary believed in exercise and getting the right things to eat in order to keep healthy. Most of her ambles were alone, and one of her favourite haunts was the city’s historic showpiece, the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. An incident occurred, one of the more amusing ones, in the secluded garden. It was a fine day and John and Mary were sitting alone in the romantic setting, he at a bench on one side of the garden and she a little distance away on another, directly opposite. Surreptitiously, she watched him out of the corner of her eye while pretending to read a magazine. He was of an age where the hairline recedes at the front and goes completely bald on the top of the head. After what seemed like half-an-hour, but was probably only ten minutes or so – her hopes, high with that certain optimism of catching his eye – were shattered as he was joined
