    Chapter One

I spied West from the corner of my eye. He was leaned over the front counter, talking to a little boy ordering a hot fudge sundae. He took the boy's grimy three dollars, smiled and rang up the order, regardless of the fact that a hot fudge sundae was priced at $4.29. I saw him slip two dollars from his own pocket into the register before handing the kid a receipt.

He turned and grabbed one of the tall plastic cups, placing it beneath the giant nozzle of the vanilla ice cream. The creamy treat swirled into the cup and well over the edge. He dumped a massive ladle of molten hot chocolate over the concoction, before finishing it off with a mound of whip cream. When he handed it over the counter the little boy's eyes grew the size of saucers and he licked his tiny lips in anticipation. West smiled again, watching as the boy bounced away towards the booth where his father sat slumped. They were regulars every Saturday. The mom would come in with the boy, hand him over to his dad, scowl, and exit. The boy bought his overpriced ice cream and bonded with his dad for the hour the divorce court allowed before scowl face returned to cart the kid away.

West pulled the Ice Queen apron over his head and trotted to the back room. It was the end of his shift and the beginning of mine, but I followed him anyway. I perched just at the edge of the corner with my shoulder leaned against the cold cinder block wall. That was nice, I said to him.

He stepped back as if I'd goosed him. He shook his head and looked to the ground, trying to hide a smile. "It was nothing. That crap's overpriced. It would have ruined the brat's day if he couldn't get the big sundae."

I took a step closer as he pulled a black long sleeve shirt over his head, covering our embarrassing uniform tee with a smiling waffle cone on the front. What's with you, Weston Morris? I asked.

His eyebrows pulled together. How do you mean, Camilla Lane?

I waved a hand at his ensemble. Ratty black shirt with holes in the cuffs, old jeans half shredded at the knees tucked into brown combat boots that wilted down to his ankles the leather was so soft. You've got this whole grunge emo thing down, but you're not. You're a contradiction.

He smiled again, revealing his startlingly handsome teeth.
