    Chapter 1

Deep in the swampy grasslands of the Okavango Delta lived two young baboons named Banna and Bree. They lived in a troupe of Chacma baboons in the heart of the Delta, far from human civilisation. Every day the two mischievous baboons rolled in the grass, leapt from tree to tree and raced from bush to bush. They looked forward to fun and adventure and rose with the sun each and every morning so that they could play together and see what the day brought. Life was good.

Banna, a male, the taller and heavier of the two, was strong and playful. He loved his family and was very protective of his friends. He had a wicked sense of humour and enjoyed playing tricks on the other animals. Bree, a young female who stood almost a head shorter than Banna, was athletic and loved being active and healthy. She was a good problem solver- as she was very clever. Bree was kind to everybody and was always helping the injured animals of the Delta. She had friends everywhere who wanted to play and explore.

In the Delta the water flowed down from the wet season in Angola and flooded the dry plains. The new waterways created a bountiful oasis for the animals after such a long dry season. The elephants sprayed each other with the excitement of having a plentiful water supply. Suckling babies emerged from under their mothers to see an abundance of water for the very first time. The timid jackals sneaked through the grass on the water’s edge, the zebra and reedbuck grazed lazily and the hippos grunted their approval as they lifted their heads above the water. The painted reed frog chirped approval while clinging to the reeds swaying with the force of the oncoming flood waters in the middle of the now vast swamplands.

Today, Banna and Bree were out on the edge of the open plains playing with the other baboons under the shade of a Baobab tree. A gust of wind broke the stillness and echoed eerily in the thickets. This startled the grazing kudu and they fled, sending the other animals into panic. Impala and warthog joined the charge as the animals deserted the area they were enjoying only moments earlier.

Banna and Bree were curious, and sensing that the sound wasn’t made by a lion or a leopard, they wanted to see
