    It wasn’t even my idea to play spin the bottle. No one understood why Emma was so determined to play because it would result in her boyfriend, Aaron, kissing someone else.

    No way, she said. When Aaron spins, the bottle will always come back to me. Then it’ll show that we were really meant to be together, right hon?

    Even Aaron cringed at that—and I can’t blame him. When you’re sixteen, you like having a girlfriend, but you don’t want to deal with all that mushy meant-to-be stuff. You just want to look cool with a pretty girl on your arm and get lucky once in a while. He did what he had to do to keep her happy, which he’d been doing as long as they’d been together.

    The rules were simple enough. I mean, we’ve all heard of Spin the Bottle. Everyone would take a turn spinning the bottle and you kissed the person the bottle pointed to, no questions asked. The boy-to-girl ratio was uneven—there were more boys than girls—so it wasn’t like there would be an even number of boys for the girls to kiss and girls for the boys to kiss. You know, if you’re into that whole kissing people of the opposite sex thing. With my luck—and with the odds against me—I would wind up having to kiss a girl.

    I definitely didn’t want to be backed into that, but more on that in a second.

    There aren’t enough girls for the boys to kiss, Aaron said. How’s that gonna work?
