There was no way in hell he was going to make it.

The moment Tesh stepped off the plane, his few minutes in Hartsfield-Jackson International instantly became a marathon. He pushed through the crowded gate and made a beeline for the departure monitor, expecting the worst. He got it. With his next gate set at the opposite end of the terminal, he doubted if he’d even have time to see his flight take off without him. But he ran, red-faced and breathless, wanting to scream in frustration, nothing ever going his way—

Which made the ticket agent’s smile that much worse.

The moment Tesh rounded the corner toward his gate, the man’s grin leapt out like a flashlight in a dark room. Though few travelers still haunted the area, milling about like restless spirits, the agent’s haughty, shit-eating grin immediately grabbed Tesh’s attention. Fucking creep, he thought. Only a TSA employee could wear such a carefree smirk, while the rest of us get to panic.

Stop! Tesh screamed. Hold the plane! His body ached as he closed the gap between them.

The agent, still grinning, slowly shook his head.

    Please wait!

Tesh nearly collided with the counter, covering the tremendous distance in a matter of seconds. His breaths were quick and harsh, his chest burning. At thirty-nine, he was not the young man he used to be.

Christ! Tesh gasped. He dropped his bag to the floor. I’m sorry...I know I’m, like, twelve minutes late...but has the plane taken off yet?

No sir, Mr. Hagman, said the agent. His name tag read: Frank. You made it. We’ve been waiting for you.

I’m really sorry. My plane...my plane from Newark didn’t land until about two minutes ago...and I had to run like a bat out of Hell to get here. Goddamn snowstorm nearly screwed everything up!

We understand, the agent nodded, still smiling. These things happen.

Tesh breathed deep and closed his eyes, fighting the urge to collapse. Considering he had only slept for three hours in the last two days, the floor looked awfully tempting.

    Mr. Hagman? They’re waiting.

Tesh handed the agent his ticket to be scanned, then grabbed his bag and dashed into the boarding tunnel. Thank you!

The ticket agent sighed. No...thank you.

The tunnel didn’t lead directly into the plane as he’d hoped, instead coming out onto the tarmac itself, where the frosty night attacked him head-on. He shivered beneath his leather jacket, and pulled his bag higher over his shoulder.

In the darkness ahead, the express jet growled to life. The moment his eyes found the plane Tesh froze, and fought the urge to turn and run. His heart pounded, stomach turning corkscrews. It wasn’t until now, as he faced the plane, that he finally understood what he was here for—where he was going. This was
