Divorced mother, Serena Jacobs had been through a lot the last few years. She was happily married with a beautiful little girl, Tess. But soon after she was born, it became apparent that there was something seriously wrong with Tess. She had Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA. Serena put all her time and effort into her daughter's illness while her husband, Trent, pulled further and further away from the two. On the day their daughter's diagnosis was confirmed, Trent also confirmed Serena's suspecions. He had turned to another for comfort and attention he needed, and he wanted a divorce. Now devastated and alone, Serena moved Hickory Ridge and soon met youth minister, Andrew Westin. They had chemistry, but Serena was still too lost and emotional to handle a romance. Could Andrew show her he could take care of her and Tess? Could Serena learn to trust him and believe that he sticks to his word?Andrew was so loving from the beginning. He saw that Tess needed a father and stepped nicely right into the role. Serena was able to lighten up and accept Trent, but soon things happened that made her revert back a bit. Of course Tess was a cute thing and played a big part in putting these two together.I did think Serena let her ex-husband off too easy. I understand how hard it was for him to see his little girl suffer like that, but he was wrong in pulling away the way he did - nothing can excuse that. Serena didn't like seeing her suffer any more than he did, yet she was their for their daughter. A father who is only there for his girl in the good times isn't much of a father...I sure didn't feel much sympathy for the guy...And then there's Charity. Charity wanted Andrew for herself and made a complete fool of herself in the process...more than once. She almost ruined Andrew's career and both Andrew and Serena's reputations! Her personality seemed to change completely during the deacons' meeting. She seemed very spiteful and mean, then was suddenly remorseful. Her story is in the next book. Can't wait to see how the author convinces us to like her!!!
