About this ebook

Dupree Jackson is everything a senior soldier of the Order of Templar should be. Cold. Unbreakable. A master at arms in the fight against demons. But as a hybrid, Dupree is beginning to lose himself to the demon half of his soul. One woman has the power to save him. If he lets her.

Kara Stone wants two things in life: to be merged with a demon so that she can become a full member of the Order; and Dupree Jackson. She knows they are meant to be together, if only Dupree would love her back.

Though his desire for Kara is undeniable, Dupree's need to protect her is stronger. Not wanting to see her merge, to face the internal struggle he deals with every day, he refuses to bond with her. But when Kara becomes a target and uncovers a dark secret about her past, Dupree may no longer have a choice...

Loribelle Hunt

Loribelle is like the South she calls home. Hot and sultry. Languid and sexy. Magnolias and gardenias scent her silk lined boudoir, and men and children alike bow to her magnificence... Okay, maybe it isn’t quite that glamorous. She does have two smart and lovely daughters who give her a run for her money and a son that will one day be someone’s model of a romance hero. (She promises.) Her husband is a real life hero, and Loribelle just tries to keep up with the demands of military life. In between, she writes a book or two. She’s had every job under the sun, but haven’t most writers? That Army military police, bookstore manager, waitress, wedding photographer, website designer experience has to come in useful sometimes. As they say in the South, it all washes out in the end. She loves hearing from her readers and can be found at http://www.loribellehunt.com.

Some books are short on conflict but with KISS OF TWILIGHT…I think the author may have a serious misunderstanding about what conflict is. Because instead of loading up her book with obstacles for Dupree and Kara to overcome before they have their Happily Ever After, she’s created one reason after another why they shouldn’t wait at all.

Here’s the set-up. Dupree is madly in love with Kara and he will DIE unless he mate-bonds in the near future. Kara is madly in love with Dupree. She is eager to mate bond. They work for an organization within which almost every secondary character at some point rolls their eyes and says something like, “Get on with the mate-bonding.”

So what does Dupree do? He hems and haws. He stalls. One second he’s thinking their bonding is a “foregone conclusion,” the next he thinks “It wasn’t time for them yet,” and next, “He knew he was going to take that risk, but he hadn’t fully accepted it yet.” It’s hard to understand what he’s waiting for, since, again, he will DIE if he doesn’t hurry up but…well, there’s the plot in all its glory.

Loribelle Hunt almost creates some internal conflict with the issue of Kara’s merging. In this world, the Templars merge with demons to become super-strength demon-fighting hybrids. But the fight against the demon’s evil presence is a losing battle and most hybrids only clock a few decades of service before they go rogue and have to be put down (this is what’s about to happen to Dupree) or else blood-bond to a mate, which keeps the hybrid sane eternally.

So, yeah, here’s the almost conflict: Kara wants to merge with a demon. Dupree doesn’t want her to merge with a demon.

    That’s it.

The conflict in this book is basically a scheduling management issues. Dupree needs to mate bond, but he wants to convince Kara not to merge first, so he can bond while she’s still human. Failing that, he needs her to merge in the very near future so that they can mate-bond before he’s put down.

It’s the equivalent of, like, “When are we getting married? Not until you quit smoking!” … or something. And, actually, Dupree came off like a commitment-averse boyfriend to me most of the time, always coming up with dumb excuses to avoid Kara’s affection and love.

Here's another thing that made no sense to me: Dupree and Kara have been madly in love for years. Everyone knows it, to the point that it’s a “foregone conclusion” that they’ll mate. But before the beginning of the book they’ve kissed precisely once. How do you get to the point where everyone assumes you’ll get married without even starting a relationship?

Final notes: the writing is bad, all telling, no showing, wooden and unengaging. And the steam level is very low. There’s a scene where Kara, who’s pretty desperate, undresses in front of Dupree. Dupree is turned on but has no trouble resisting her naked body and shuffling her along to her next duty. Talk about chemistry, right?
