About this ebook

Monica Rhodes is a bounty hunter. Although an uncommon profession for a woman, she excels at her work and enjoys the solitude it brings. In St. Louis, she accepts a bounty on an Englishman who is accused of murder, witchcraft, devil-worship, and worse. Along the way, she meets Ruprecht Eichen, a German doctor seeking revenge for his murdered family members. The two strike up a cautious partnership in pursuit of their mutual foe, but Monica can't help but wonder whether simple revenge is all that motivates him. Whatever the answer, it is clear that they must rely on one another; a black moon is rising over the last days of the Old West, bringing with it terror, mystery, and intrigue.

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

The sun set slowly over the waterfront, turning the ordinarily brown waters of the Mississippi River into a glimmering cascade of light. Despite the busy dockworkers, returning fishing vessels, and the steamboats coming to rest at the docks, the air seemed still and calm to Monica Rhodes, who stood waiting by an empty dock. She was somewhat tall for a woman, standing over five and a half feet in a worn pair of jeans and some sturdy leather boots. Her hair was black and cut short above her chin, framing an angular face that was now set with a determined look.

Slung from her belt were a sheathed hunting knife and a holster with an accompanying revolver. In her right hand she loosely held a short-barreled shotgun of the sort that stagecoaches throughout the West were regularly protected (and held up) with. In her other hand, she carried a folded piece of paper declaring that a man named Samuel Wilkes was wanted for thievery. She'd picked up the bounty while traveling through Memphis about a week ago and had tracked down Wilkes' friends and acquaintances until one of them had admitted to her that Wilkes was bound for St. Louis on a steamboat which was now half an hour late at its berth.

Although bounty hunting was a grueling and often dangerous job, Monica couldn't deny the rush that came from finally tracking down a mark. The waiting that came just before could be agonizing, though, and she worried that she'd gotten the wrong dock until she spotted a steamer making its way toward her. She straightened up and rolled
