    About The Author

    CHAPTER ONE - Introduction

For the purposes of this book, magic is not the smoke and mirrors of illusionists using sleight of hand. Magic is any art that invokes supernatural powers. Most religions recognise its existence, and many of them strongly discourage its use. Magic is, or was, practiced in a multitude of forms across the whole spectrum of human culture.

The fact that there was so much biblical condemnation of magic and witchcraft implies that it was a force to be reckoned with. Electricity was unknown until recently and now its magical properties are regarded as science. Will we one day understand magic well enough for it also to be deemed a science?

What is magic? It is a many-faceted thing that means something different to everyone. It can be made to do almost anything you want, and it can take many different forms.

In some cases, it is accepted on blind faith. It doses what it does without any explanation. Readers accept that it performs in the same way that phones are used without knowing or questioning how they work.

However, many readers may feel cheated if no explanations are given. It is not always necessary to give a completely detailed breakdown of the theory of your particular brand of magic. But, a few pointers may go a long way towards stimulating an interest in the magic of your story.

Oddly enough, science pretends to ignore magic, but uses mathematical tricks to explain away the unknown. We use and understand electricity, but there are aspects of it that cannot be fully explained. Is it magic? Mathematics uses imaginary numbers in formulae where pure science cannot provide satisfactory answers. J-notation is once such trick, where j is the square root of –1; an impossible to solve imaginary number. Equations used in electrical calculations often resort to using j-notation.

Magic is an attempt by a magician, witch, sorcerer, seer, diviner or any other practitioner to understand, experience or influence something or someone. The tools that magicians may use include rituals, symbols, items, actions, gestures, chants and language. These tools may be used individually or in various combinations.

Superstition, fear and a long-standing association with paganism has led common people to shun magic and those who practice it. Religions such as Islam, Judaism and Christianity have always condemned witchcraft and magic. By virtue of that fact alone it can be inferred that those religions actually recognise that magic exists. The Muslims have daily prayers that ask for protection against magic.

Magic rituals typically use archaic language and strange symbols to add to the mysticism. Similarly, common folk ward themselves against magic with prayers, symbols, amulets or sacred items.

Whether sacred or profane, the power of words is in their secrecy and exclusivity. Many
