    Calum’s Culloden – Part 1

Colonel Richard York was seething and had been for over a week. His plan to capture the rebel prince had worked. Right up to the moment Maclean interfered. Again.

He swept the papers off the table, stood up and strode to the window. The stone and mud cottage he’d requisitioned was at the top of a steep hill from where he could see the army camped in the fields below. He wiped some of the grime off the small window and squinted out into the dull winter light.

Cumberland had returned to London to prepare for the French invasion, and taken some of his senior officers with him. So now there were fewer officers plotting against him. Fewer he had to watch for the telltale signs that they were about to make their move. But there were still too many. He looked back into the room without seeing the bare walls and packed-earth floor.

What he needed was a battle, a real battle, not this strike-and-run affair the rebels liked. In a real battle officers got killed. And not always by the enemy.

He realised suddenly that they would be watching him right then. He pulled back from the window and stepped further back into the gloomy room. He had to be more careful. They would be waiting for him to drop his guard.

    Maclean.

It was all the fault of that Scottish scum that he was still with this filthy army and the men who hated him and resented his intelligence and military prowess. He should be in London, at court, the centre of attention and famous for single-handedly ending the rebellion. But Maclean had taken that from him. His chance to show them all.

He wanted to kill the man with his bare hands. To feel the life drain out of him. To listen to him gasp for mercy as he died.

He recalled that glorious night three years past. He’d been abed and robbed of sleep by the hatred raging through him. The officers had ordered his dearest friend to India with only a day’s notice. He knew they’d sent his boyhood friend away because he was the only one he could trust. He’d been alone. Isolated, just as they’d planned.

He’d lain awake trying to work out how to stay ahead of them, to predict their intentions. He’d been younger then and less able to circumvent or thwart their plans. But not now.

Then he’d heard the noise. Just a slow creak of a board outside his door. Then another. The sound of someone moving very slowly. The door handle squeaked very slightly as the door opened inch by inch.

When the man slipped into the room, York was already behind the door and hit him hard on the side of his head with the butt of his pistol, sending him stunned and bleeding to the floor.

York saw the man’s bloody face at his feet and knew he’d been sent by the others to kill him while he slept. The cowards. The sons of whores had not the courage to face
