Really not good. Zane is just 100 percent unlikable, and acts like a big, whiney baby man. It’s so not hot to see a grown man acting like an eleven year old boy who has decided to hate his new stepmother no matter what. Never mind that she wasn’t the father’s girlfriend, because, honestly, who would have cared if she was? He was a widower. He was more than entitled to female companionship. So the very premise of his beef with her is flawed. We don’t need to wait for his “proof” of her innocence- because if she had been boinking Laurence five times a day, she still wouldn’t have been “guilty” of anything wrong. Zane is just a tool.

Then there is the weird thing with the dad, mom, mistress nonsense that made him storm off. First and foremost is the totally bizarre way this author pretends this book happens in the 1800’s instead of the 2000’s. Science is a thing. Surrogates are a thing. Hell, TURKEY BASTERS AND SYRINGES are a THING. So the creepy weird resolution that he feels somehow makes everything a-ok is just so downright weird and 100 percent unnecessary to the story. They could have had the exact storyline and used IVF. It was just mind numbingly stupid, as is the h deciding to trust the H about his “girlfriend/mistress” situation. Any normal person would require a little more than an overly slick story.

Overall, this is one of the more annoying of this genre. Between the pure stupidity, the Virgin fetishisizing, the misogyny and the way the author assumes the reader is a moron, there isn’t much to like— unless you are into long drawn out paragraphs about farming pearls, types of pearls, and jewelry design. There are so many better options out there. I recommend you keep looking.
