Sharon Skinner holds a B.A. In English, an M.A. in Creative Writing and a Poetic License. She has worked as a landscaper, a cashier, a maid, a waitress, a communications specialist, a videographer, a technical writer, a project management consultant and a biomedical field service engineer and served aboard the USS Jason as one of the first women assigned to a US Navy ship. Her poetry and fiction have been published in myriad local, national and international publications. Sharon is an active member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and serves as the Assistant Regional Advisor for SCBWI AZ.Her recent publishing credits include In Case You Didn’t hear Me the First Time (2010), The Healer’s Legacy (2012), The Nelig Stones (2013), Mirabella and the Faded Phantom (March 2014).     Tavara surveyed the gallery as she waited to be announced. The solid doors at the end of the room appeared rather plain, especially contrasted with all the waiting people dressed in their lace and satin finery and ribbon-encrusted uniforms. Most of these people would never see the Queen, yet they waited, hopeful, if not always patient.

    A young woman, her blonde hair wound in a tight bun, stole a disapproving glance at Tavara. These are the people who think they rule Britannia, Tavara thought, smiling casually at the woman, as if she were completely at home at Buckingham palace awaiting an audience with the Queen of England. I am most definitely out of my element. She arranged her skirts to steady her hands—the amount of lace and ruching on the garment had seemed excessive until she’d arrived at the palace and seen what the other women were wearing—and wondered once more why she had been summoned here.

    She considered the velvet-covered benches that lined the walls, but decided against attempting to sit in the bustled skirt that helped her to fit into fashionable society. Her dress wasn’t exactly appropriate for presentation to the Queen, the train fell yards short from what it should be, but she’d been summoned on short notice, so either she would be forgiven by the court, or not. She wasn’t sure she cared either way.
