Pathfinder is a magical fantasy novel for children and follows the adventures of Alice Todhunter Moon – who prefers to be called Tod!Tod is a descendent of an ancient race of people who are Pathfinders and who could originally breathe underwater. Now very few of them still have the ability but it is this that initiates the evil sorcerer Oraton-Marr to kidnap the entire village of the remaining Pathfinder’s to steal for him the rare egg of the Great Orm, which is hidden underwater; he plans to throw them all in one by one until someone can fetch it for him. Along the way we meet a variety of Magykal creatures including dragons and garmin – a strange fierce creature. We also meet Tod’s best friends Ferdie and Oskar, and they become intertwined with the characters of another book series by the same author. It isn’t necessary to have read the Septimus Heap Magyk books in order to enjoy this, but it might make you curious about some of the characters and I would thoroughly recommend them also. I found the book a thrilling read, and the further I read, the harder it was to put down. If you like fantasy stories, then this is definitely one for you!

Oh, how I've missed the world of Septimus Heap!

At first I found the story a bit hard to get into, as I didn't recall anything about PathFinders in the original series. But once Tod crossed paths with a few familiar characters, I knew I couldn't wait to find out how her world would intersect with Septimus's.

I loved getting the chance to revisit some beloved characters (now a few years older), but I also appreciated getting to know some new ones. And I'm so glad that the main character this time is a young girl, instead of a boy. I read tons of young adult and adult urban fantasy with strong female leads, but boys still seem to dominate the middle-grade fantasy world.

I particularly appreciate how Sage managed to blend in some of my favorite elements from the original series with new elements that kept the story feeling "fresh" and not like a rehash. I don't know how well the story would stand "alone" (for those who've never read the Septimus Heap series), but fans of the series will most likely enjoy this story and be eager for more.

A really good start to this follow on series. New central characters mean you can read this without a great knowledge of the previous Septimus Heap books, but they are so good you really should give them a go. Magykal and at the same time verydown to earth, these are a great read for those who enjoy their magic with lots of adventure and more than a bit of humour.

She's done it again, a thrilling adventure full of Darke stuff, Septimus being Septimus, and a very strange world between Jenna and Beetle, although short, it was a very intersting aftermath of Septimus Heap.

Read this aloud to my daughter. She said she wanted to rate it a thousand stars.
