    Unexpected Target - Tamika Taylor

    9781483538587

She sat on the front porch rocking back and forth as the trains passed by, wondering what would be the next step in her life. Cheryl had been having problems in her life since she was a child. It was always one thing after the next. For a while she was at a point of stability but now everything was about to be turned upside down. How could she let this happen?

Cheryl grew up in the big city but always preferred the country, drawn to its open fields and quietness. Cheryl had a beauty that was distracting, and the body to go right along with the pretty face. As a child, Cheryl hated that she had thick thighs, but she had grown right into them. Men would always compliment her on how pretty she was and how perfect her body looked. However, she was never interested in relationships; she thought that men could not be trusted. She stopped all communication with anyone that tried to get too serious. To her, men were sex objects and only good for sexual pleasures. She vowed that what happened to her mother would never happen to her. Although relationships were not one of her priorities, getting an education and a good paying job was. Cheryl had a Master’s in business with a minor in English. She had worked in the army tactical unit doing special missions for years before she branched out on her own. The way she lived, nobody would have guessed that she was richer than anyone could have imagined, but she had messed up big time. She had gotten comfortable with a guy and now both of their lives were at risk.

Just then, the phone rang, and she knew who was calling. She answered but said nothing. I have another one for you; this should be easy it’s local, said the caller on the other end of the line.

Local? I did not hear of anyone coming into the country that would be of interest to our clients.

This one is different. The information will be sent to you in a couple of minutes. This job might require a little more work because we do not have a current location, just the last place he was seen.

Cheryl said ok and hung up. She was relieved that this job was local because of the predicament that she was in. Plus she did not think she could stomach a long plane ride at this time. She sat there for a little while longer when she heard a ringing coming from her computer letting her know that she had mail. She slowly rose from the chair and walked into the house. She walked to he refrigerator to pour some orange juice before going to her office. Cheryl thought she did a very good job of putting her office together. It was very cozy. A couch sat off in the corner near the window, and she had a three-screen set up computer and a bookshelf was against the walls with books from a range of authors.

She sat down at her computer desk and opened her mail. The first thing she saw was Tre Spencer, last known location Manhattan, New York. She quickly scrolled to the bottom and there it was: those piercing golden brown eyes. It could not be, there had to be a mistake! She reached to place her glass on the desk but missed, and the glass fell to the floor spilling juice all over her Persian rug. At that moment she did not care and for a while it felt like she could not breathe. She grabbed her phone and dialed a number that was only used for emergencies, but to her this was an emergency.

Is there a problem? was the answer from the other end of the line

    No.

    So you got the information?

    Yes. Who called this job?

You are not here to ask questions, just to do your job. When did you get so curious about our clients anyway?

I know we usually have high class targets and I have never heard about this person before.

Just do your job and get it done as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence. Click. The line went dead. Cheryl sat there confused, a million thoughts rushing through her head at once. How could this be? It must be a mistake. Cheryl took up the phone and dialed a number that she rarely ever used but the phone just rang and rang. Then she heard, This is Tre, you know what to do. Beep.

It was a rainy evening and Cheryl had just got back from London, finishing a job when she stopped to get coffee from her favorite coffee shop on the corner of 5th and Wayne. She went in got a cup of French vanilla Frappuccino and a chocolate chip muffin. As she was about to leave, the rain began pouring. She did not have an umbrella and decided she would make a run to her car. It was not far away and she was tired and just wanted to take a shower and lay in bed. Cheryl stepped out of the coffee shop and made a dash to her car. She was almost there when she collided with someone, feeling as if she had run into a wall.

With fury burning in her eyes, she said, Yo asshole, why don’t you watch where you’re going? Even though she was the one in the wrong.

"I apologize ma’am. I was just trying to get home out of this rain. Let me get you another cup.

No thanks and so was I, but I am here talking to you getting soaked because you stepped in my way.

The stranger replied, I am sorry again I do not know how far you have to go, but I live two buildings down. Let me put your clothes in the dryer for you.

It’s ok, my car is right there.

Please let me do something for you after spilling your coffee.

Cheryl studied the guy looking down at her with pleading eyes. He was gorgeous; he was as close to a Greek god as she had ever seen. His skin was bronze with golden brown eyes that had a speck of black; he was 6 feet of pure muscle. He was soaked and his clothes
