Chapter 1 – The First Night
Judging from the size of the light, it was hard to tell what it was exactly, but two things were for sure…it was huge and it was getting closer. Josh Mundy could only stare for several more seconds as he lay in his Slumberjack sleeping bag next to a dying campfire, transfixed by what he had originally thought was a star, and obvious for several minutes certainly was anything but a star.
Then the light ceased to move closer and seemed, for an indeterminate amount of time to simply stay the same size. Josh snapped out of his paralysis and reached over to shake Vern’s sleeping bag.
Vern!
He hissed in a harsh whisper. No response. Vern!
He hissed again, this time a little louder and accompanied with another shake. His buddy only mumbled and snorted slightly. Vern!!
Josh finally hollered his name and yanked on the side of the sleeping bag.
Aaahh!
Vern Ernesto flipped over, coming out of a deep sleep and then sat straight up, breathing heavily and looking frantically around. Wha…what is it man?
He looked straight at Josh.
Josh stabbed his finger at the sky toward the location of the light. Vern looked up and then scrunched his face up in confusion and then a little bit of frustration. He obviously wasn’t seeing it. Josh looked up. Now, suddenly, he wasn’t seeing it either. It was gone. Well, not entirely gone, but now just what it was before – a very bright looking star.
A star, Man?
Vern looked at Josh in disgust. You woke me up for a star?
Josh didn’t know what to say. He simply stared up, his eyes intent on the light, waiting for any fluctuation to justify his actions. None came. He continued to stare, not sure what else to do.
Vern flipped back over on his stomach and moved away where Josh couldn’t reach his sleeping bag. Whatever Man!
He fluffed his pillow and plopped his head down.
Josh tried to ignore the embarrassment by mumbling to no one in particular. It was there a second ago.
Whatever Man!
Was the unsympathetic response again. I was sleeping good.
Josh lay back down slowly and settled his head onto his feather pillow. Still staring at the spot, waiting with no reward for evidence that he wasn’t losing his mind or seeing things.
What was that? He smelled something burning. It was awful; it smelled like burnt hair or something. He sat upright again. Something was burning and it was close. He looked over toward Vern.
VERN!
Whatever Man!
Came the angry reply.
Vern, your sleeping bag is on fire!
In his attempt to escape the wild midnight antics of his lunatic friend that woke him up in the middle of dreams of catching big fish he had scooted too close to the campfire. Though it was nearly out, it hadn’t missed the opportunity to ignite the synthetic sleeping bag with a hot coal.
Whatever Man!
Vern’s repetitive response seemed all he could say, or shout for the night.
Josh started to get up to help with the flames that were now spreading on Vern’s sleeping bag.
Vern looked at him sourly. Get away from me Man! What’s up with you tonight I...
Then for the second time in two minutes, Vern expostulated a wild, Aaahh!
as the heat penetrated the bag and scalded his feet. He jumped up quicker than the blink of an eye and shuttled out of the open end of his bag, commencing to beat on the flames with his bare hands. Ouch!
Slap, slap, slap. Ouch that stuff is sticking to my hand!
By this time Josh had grabbed his pillow and with one ‘thump’, the flames were out.
They remained motionless for several seconds, Josh with his pillow still gripped in his hands over the burnt spot in the sleeping bag and Vern staring alternately at the pillow, Josh, and his hand with its melted polyester stuck to his palm.
Josh pulled the pillow off and rocked back to his heels. Vern, I am sorry…it’s all my fault.
Vern was silent as he picked the blobs off of his palm. Finally, he succeeded in removing the last one and looked up at his friend in the dim moonlight. It’s alright Man, forget it.
And with that, he pulled his sleeping bag even further away from Josh making certain he was away from the fire this time.
Josh looked at his pillow. It had globs of dark melted substance stuck to it was well. It didn’t
