Chapter1
He walked into my office like a breath of a summer breeze. He was a handsome man with dirty blonde hair and hazel eyes and I wondered why he was looking for someone like me. He was an untamed powerful man with a look on his face that said how much he didn’t want to be there. He didn’t want my help, but he didn’t have much of a choice in the matter. I was the only one who could help him.
Hope looked at the newcomer. You sure you want to talk to her? She’s a little weird.
I don’t have much choice.
Let me get your information and I’ll see if she’s available.
Hope gathered all of the paperwork, including the promise to pay and walked into her employer’s office. Rosie was sitting with her feet on her desk, examining a strange looking paperweight.
What do you need?
Rosie asked her employee.
There’s someone here to see you. He’s from the FBI special division.
Hope was a pretty young lady with blond hair and blue eyes; she was small, but extremely feisty and protective of her employer, never letting just anyone get past her desk.
Let’s see what he has to say.
Rosie straightened out, placing the item back onto her desk. Show him in and bring some coffee.
Hope nodded, walking back into the reception area where the man was waiting for her. How do you take your coffee?
Black.
The man answered, obviously frustrated with what seemed to be frivolous questions, but Hope just smiled at him, knowing that her boss should have fun with this. She informed him that she would bring the coffee in to him in a bit and told him that he could go into the office. He walked in, unsure of what to expect and was immediately confronted by the woman he was supposed to get help from. She wasn’t what he was expecting at all. She looked perfectly normal to start, with mocha colored skin and straight dark brown hair. Her green eyes glittered with some kind of amusement that she wasn’t going to share with the world. Ms. Zuckerman?
he asked.
That would be me.
Her words came out like a laugh. It was obvious that she found something very amusing about him. What do you need from me, G-man?
I was told that you sometimes consult in cases.
I do, sometimes, if I find it interesting enough.
Rosie looked at him expectantly, hoping that he had some juicy case for her to work on, because she thought he was nice to look at. What’s your name anyway?
Hope had entered the room and was watching him carefully as she passed out the coffee cups.
He picked up the cup and sniffed the expensive blend that Hope kept stocked in the house. Thank you.
Then he turned back to Rosie who was drinking some sort of super sweet concoction that had been made with ice. My name is Special Agent Leonard.
I’m not going to call you Special Agent Leonard. You look like a Kevin; I’m going to call you Kevin.
Kevin is my name.
He looked at her, just a tiny bit in awe. Your secretary told you my name, didn’t she?
Rosie thought about how to answer that. The truth was that she hadn’t been told the name, but she thought that he wouldn’t believe that anyway. Yep, well, Kevin, can you tell me why you’re here?
Well...
He let the words trail off; it was obvious that he wasn’t sure how to share this information. Rosie looked at him, waiting for him to finish, trying not to push too hard for the information. It’s my partner.
Rosie looked down at her nails; she reached into her desk and pulled out a small file, cleaning out under them as she spoke. Was he killed? I don’t do vengeance jobs.
Kevin stood up, his face was flushed, anger rising like a vicious violent bile into his throat. He’s not dead. He went rogue. We have to find him.
Why is that so important?
We don’t know why he went rogue, we don’t know who he’s with and he has access to some rather sensitive information. We have to bring him into custody.
Aren’t you the all powerful FBI?
Don’t do this.
He was getting angry at Rosie; she could tell this and didn’t seem to care.
You need to learn to control your temper.
She reached across the desk. Let me see what you have.
Kevin handed her the file. It was thick with personal information and past case reports. Rosie flipped through them, starting to pull a basic picture of the man together in her mind. He seemed like a fairly normal law enforcement agent, ignoring the fact that he was a werewolf. He was a member of the special division.
The special division is a pet name for an unnamed section in all government organizations. This group of people is unique and deals with supernatural events and creatures. They solve the problems that the unknowing human agents wouldn’t be able to handle. Rosie always liked to think of it as the X-files, but with magic instead of aliens.
Rosie couldn’t help but smile as she started to glance through the pile. As of yet, everything looked just fine. She couldn’t see anything that would lead him to betraying his oath. Do you have anything of his, I need it to be something personal, as personal as you can find.
I brought something with me. I left it in my car, because I wasn’t sure if you would need it.
Get it, bring it here with you. Hope should let you right back in.
When Kevin left, Rosie sat back and sipped her coffee. There was definitely something strange going on here, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. First one handsome man walked into her office then she finds out that he needs her help to find another handsome man; at the very least, she’s going to have some good views during the course of this case.
Still there was something that bugged her about this. From what she has seen, and what she can tell of his partner, something seems completely out of character about this. He came back after a few minutes and Rosie looked like she had been waiting patiently for him. Her feet were back on her desk, and she leaned back in the desk chair in what looked like a very comfortable position. Her eyes, however, were sharp and watchful. Only a fool would take her casual stance for ignorance.
Kevin took note of her when he handed her the jacket. Grey left this in the car last time we were working.
So this was before he went rogue?
Yes.
Was it after he met the woman?
I think so. He’d been dating someone, but it wasn’t serious. I haven’t met her; I think her name is Bridget or something like that.
It wasn’t until after he spoke that he realized that he hadn’t told her about Grey’s girlfriend. How did you know about that?
It was in the files.
Rosie examined the jacket. It was a cheap polyester blend, perfect for a law enforcement agent with a dress code on a tight budget. She noticed that it smelled like mediocre cologne and that his hair must have been short and brown because of the hair that was still tucked in the collar. She plucked it off and held it to the light. This should help.
Kevin noted the hair with a nod. How is this going to work?
I’m going to concentrate, and you’re going to drink coffee and stay quiet.
Rosie had a wide smile on her face. She held the jacket in one hand and draped it across her lap. The hair was laid across the back of her hand, aiding in her mission to gather information.
Kevin watched her, but it just looked like she was sleeping in her chair. He sipped his coffee and stopped himself from asking the thousands of questions that he had flowing through his mind. He had seen some strange things before, but it was never anything like this. He had spent his adult life dealing with supernatural occurrences that the normal population didn’t want or need to know, but if she could get information from sleeping it was going to be something he had never seen before. Hope stuck her head into the room and motioned for him to leave, and he gathered his coffee up and left.
Hope carefully shut the door behind him. It’s got to be boring in there. I thought that you might be a little more comfortable out here.
Thank you.
Kevin sat in one of the comfortable chairs that were in the makeshift waiting area. How do you get into a business like this?
Rosie helped me out of a bind once, and she needed a secretary. I needed a job, so it worked out.
It doesn’t seem like she’s very busy.
He noted the fact that he hadn’t heard the phone ring or seen anyone else there since he had been there.
It stays busy enough, but no one will come around as long as you’re here.
Hope stood to refill his coffee.
No, thank you.
He waved her away from his mug. How long does this usually take?
Not very long, normally, maybe half an hour provided everything goes fine.
Hope’s smile was reassuring, but Kevin was nervous. You don’t look like you like being here.
Not really, I don’t like the fact that I have to come to consultants to solve my crime.
A lot of agents don’t like it at first, but after they work the first case with her, they usually call up just to ask basic questions.
Why?
I think that her ability makes most law enforcement agents nervous at first, but as soon as they realize that she uses them in conjunction with more traditional investigative methods, it makes them more comfortable.
There was an awkward silence for around ten minutes while Kevin examined the walls. He had almost memorized the specific pattern of the stucco that had been placed over the drywall by the time that Rosie stepped out of her office. She looked like she had just woken up. Did you find anything?
Kevin rose to meet her.
Not much.
Rosie frowned. This must have been used primarily for work.
I think so, he hated wearing suits.
Kevin noted.
His hair gave me a little, though. He was in love with a girl, but I couldn’t find out much about her. There’s something shifty going on, but it seems like there’s something trying to block my abilities.
Hope’s eyes got big as Rosie spoke. "What do you mean? What
