    Cooking is not a spectator sport. Our quality of life is very much dependent on what we eat and the way in which we eat our meals. It shows the amount of respect we have for ourselves; the way we treat ourselves, taking care of our bodies and souls. The kitchen is the most important place in our home. We are all worthy of good food and meals eaten properly.

    In the ways of cooking and making our way around a kitchen, the recession has been good for us. Home cooking is something many of us needed to reconnect with. At a time like this we are fortunate to have celebrity chefs to teach us just how easy working in the kitchen can be, using real ingredients and techniques that are usually much less daunting than home cooks

    realize when they actually see someone else do it. This is a wonderful thing. At the same time, keep in mind that cooking is not a spectator sport. We need to get in our kitchens and with real, whole ingredients, using our best tools—our bare, clean hands—and create meals.

    Food should be made by hand; It is an extension of ourselves. A good working, productive kitchen shows character and integrity. It should calm and restore our soul through our hands and our senses. Take the time to think about what comes from your kitchen, What kind of place is it? Is it actually a place or a reheating zone? Do you eat there? Does your kitchen sustain you or is it just a room in your house, or a pass through to get somewhere else? What is your relationship with your kitchen? When was the last time you made a meal from scratch? Think about how you feel about your kitchen and what you make there.

    The food world is an overwhelming one. Whenever I become overwhelmed by something, I know it’s time to simplify, reorganize and clean-up. Getting a clear view of my own world helps to change my perspective. Gaining simplicity and peace of mind does not take money; good stuff should not be complicated. Simplicity does not mean stark or empty and it certainly does not mean uneducated.

    Once I came to realize the simple, much overlooked fact that we are human beings, my life began to gradually change. I thought more about the little things in my life. I started to think about how I wanted to be and feel. One of our basic necessities is food. Our society breathes into us certain values toward food—our food. A commercial should not make us feel that we are better people for eating at a certain restaurant or buying a certain product. The food we eat should not be justified by commercial marketing sales. By saving us time does not always constitute a good spirit on our part.

    Our lives are not perfect worlds. A lot of people in America are on a budget and can barely afford food. Many people would like to afford better quality food, but choose lesser quality in order to afford other expenses. Our world is a different place than it used to be. We have technological expenses—we can’t do without—that we didn’t have twenty years ago: cell phones, internet, and satellite television. Television shows on cooking bring great entertainment and wishful thinking to viewers but many cannot afford ingredients to make the recipes the celebrity chefs are making. We have this vicious cycle going of consumerism wanting us to buy fast and easy to prepare and celebrity chefs trying to inspire us cook.
