Southern Nevada
Can you guess the identity of Nevada's largest industry?
Of course you can. It's tourism, especially the tourists who are drawn to the king-sized gambling casinos that line the streets of Las Vegas, Reno, Tahoe, and Laughlin.
Hey, if that's what you like, go for it.
But you should know that there's more to Nevada (Spanish for snow clad) than the roulette wheels, the dice tables, and the slot machines.
A century ago, the big attraction was gold and silver. The famous Comstock Lode played a major role in the early history of the state.
Earlier in this century, a major attraction was the state's liberal laws regarding divorce. Some of the most prominent figures in the country - movie stars, heiresses, people in politics, prominent industrialists - journeyed to Nevada in those days to obtain one of the state's quick divorces.
And of course, the climate is a substantial draw, as it is throughout the Southwest. This makes it possible to engage in outdoor activities almost year-round.
But there is no argument that gambling has had - and con-tinues to have - the greatest impact on the Silver State (also known as the Sagebrush State). Since it was legalized during the height of the Depression (1931), gambling has expanded, and grown, drawing the entire state along with it. Today, Nevada's population is in the neighborhood of two million people, and roughly half of them live in greater Las Vegas.
