Romantic Getaways in Southern California - Don & Marge Young

    up

    Southern California

Southern California has been one of the nation's favorite playgrounds for generations. The abundance of good weather, the allure of the ocean, the infinite variety of activities to be enjoyed, and the undefined joie de vivre of the people of California make having fun infectious.

Perhaps having fun is not synonymous with romance, but it's pretty hard to be romantic when you're NOT having fun.

Palm Springs & the Coachella Valley

By car: Palm Springs is a mere 150 miles from Los Angeles by way of Interstate 10. The same highway carries a steady flow of tourists from Arizona, only a few hours' drive to the east.

By air:: An increasing number of feeder airlines are providing service to Palm Springs. Riverside and San Bernardino are less than 100 miles away, and there are major airports in both Los Angeles and San Diego.

The home of the rich and famous, Palm Springs and its sister cities lie in a line along California's lovely San Jacinto Mountains. From east to west, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and Palm Springs adorn the side of Highway 111 like a string of pearls.

Golf courses, tennis clubs, elite restaurants, posh resorts, exquisite condominiums, all provide a haven not only for movie stars and television personalities, but for those who labor in other fields as well.

Still, it was Hollywood that first discovered Palm Springs and it was Hollywood that created its popularity. Since the 1920s, people watching has been one of the area's primary pastimes, and the same holds true today.

Many of the old movie personalities live here in retirement. Streets bear the names of such celebrities as Dinah Shore, Bob Hope, Fred Waring, and Frank Sinatra. A hospital bears the name of former President Eisenhower, and a rehabilitation clinic, the name of former First Lady Betty Ford. Bob Hope has a huge home that sits atop a hill, and he continues to sponsor a nationally televised golf tournament held here each year.

Obviously, people such as these can afford to live wherever they choose, and they have chosen to live in Coachella Valley. That tells you a lot.

Built in 1925 as the private home of Humphrey Birge and his family, the owners of the Pierce Arrow Motor Car Co., this inn gives new meaning to the term intimate. When Mrs. Birge died, she sold her house to Ruth Hardy, who turned it into a 20-room hotel. You didn't call for a reservation, you had to be invited. Over the
