She came to me in the middle of the night, floating down a silver beam of moonlight through an open window, her long black hair a shroud around her heart-shaped face. I knew who she was immediately, and I knew why she had come. Days spent reading old Asian myths and nights spent praying and leaving offerings had all paid off. I had hoped, but I don’t think I had really believed she would come.
She stretched out a pale arm to me, her hand touching my short black hair, cupping my round cheek, acknowledging me. My heart ached, but I smiled. She smiled back.
As I looked into her face, into her slightly slanted, almond brown eyes, she said the words I longed to hear. My dear Jodi. I am here to grant you a wish.
†
Six months earlier, I never would have imagined making supplications to a long lost Japanese goddess. I was a Junior at UCLA, studying archeology with an eye towards restoration work in Japan. My best friend Tanya was supposed to come with me to muck through old Buddhist temples and dine on ramen. We’d been roommates, study mates, soul mates, both of us being Japanese American.
I remembered sitting in our dorm room late one night. She stressed out about passing midterms in Statistics. I calmed her by combing her sleek black hair, so much longer than my own. I confess that I snuck in a light kiss to the nape of her neck. She looked so delicate with her small frame and her heart-shaped lips. I fantasized that she could love me, even as a girl.
And then she met Roger.
Roger was a Business student, which of course meant that I didn’t like him. He seemed nice enough, oozing charm, giving gifts not only to Tanya but her friends as well, including me. And he liked dogs, and nature hikes, and being green with the environment. All of that Tanya just adored. He also was fine with her love of sushi and Korean barbeque and her aspirations of travel. He promised to take her wherever she wanted. I could see the light in her eyes when he said that. Someone to pay for all the travel she wanted to do? A dream come true, for her at least.
To be honest, he was a decent guy. Too slick, like a used car salesman. I just wished that I could fill his shoes.
Look what he got me!
Tanya announced to me one morning at our favorite coffee place. She held out her hand to me like a princess, displaying the shiny new diamond. It sparkled almost as much as her eyes. But that diamond to me was like a knife, cutting deep, breaking foolish dreams. We’d kissed once, her and me. But she’d been drunk. I didn’t know if she remembered it the next day.
Congratulations,
I said, trying to sound as excited, as joyous as her. I couldn’t help that my eyes were blinking back tears.
I want you to be my maid of honor,
she told me. She thought my tears were tears of happiness.
