    WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT

This book tries to fill in the gaps that the average teacher might not be aware of or not able to share. We have found in our years of study, research and performing that the majority of professionals out there never get to the point in their studies where they really understand the business as it is.

We will introduce you to 4 ideas that will work no matter whether you are a dancer, teacher or musician. Artists set the stage for the business of creativity around the world. My wish is for you to continue to share the beauty and fun of Arabic music and dance wherever you go.  Being an artist that is relatively new is one thing but making a big name for oneself in this chosen career is another. Walid and Morwenna will share their expertise with you.

This book will educate you, entertain you and hopefully allow you ways to grow as an artist yourself.  Use this book as a reference guide, study guide and a way of reaching out to others you run across in your travels in this wonderful business we share.

Enjoy and be open-minded. Take it day by day one step at a time. Read the thoughts and do the exercises.  You can start anywhere depending on your experience. I like to start at the beginning and build. You can also jump around and find what just suits you but I feel you are cheating yourself. You have to be committed to anything you feel seriously about.

The pages at the end are left bare so that you have a place to keep key notes. You should also keep a daily log book. You might decide to take longer than a month for each program. This is fine. Just stick to a schedule diligently.

    92. PAYING  ATTENTION TO FAME

Every artist was at one time an amateur.

No one was born a professional.

Everything has to be learned and practiced.

All dancers were at one time babies, children, sons and daughter, husbands and wives etc. They were

    all just

    regular people.

    Eventually they found dance.

At some point they became good and eventually a name you recognize.

Dance is work. It requires artfulness and intuition along with dedication and the work.

With these well rounded qualities you become better at what you do.

Success always starts with a calling.

The difference between famous and anonymous breaks down to how many buckets of sweat you have produced.

Only a few are selected for fame and success.

To impress you have to works that shows for itself. Not just pipe dreams.

Do not focus on impressing others. Just do it and be humble.

    ––––––––

    93 AIM TO EARN

    Dance is a business too.

We all have practical demands in our lives.

Do not be over eager to pursue opportunities beyond your confidence and experience. You will sabotage yourself.

This is uncomfortable and stressful. You are forever guessing.

Try quiet confidence and not wishful thinking.

Aim one step higher than your comfort zone.

This will increase your worth as your skills increase.

Widen your income streams as you become more proficient.

Ask for more by saying Is that the best you can offer? It does not hurt to try, pleasantly.

    Do not become greedy though.

There is always another dancer that is waiting in the wings to take your place.

Make the most of the skills you have to offer across a wide range of places and you will never run out of fun and happy places to work.

    94 GROW AS YOU GO

If you are growing you are always going to be out of your comfort zone.

Create shorter pieces first and build to longer ones.

This will help you respond more fully, deeply and widely.

The more you do, the more you have to say and how it is done.

    You will notice more.

If you have not completed the short first, long is going to be very difficult.

Dance your way up and increase chances of success.

    Short Pieces = 1 - 4 min = folklore/ or segment of longer piece.

    Medium Pieces = 3-6 min = Oriental / Solo

Feature Pieces = 5-10 min = Mini show.

Long Piece = 10-20 min – Full Oriental show.

    MAKE TIME YOUR FRIEND

Have time on your side. Make it your friend.

Coax time to come to your side.

JUST START: Let go of the future.

Ask what is the next most important step that I need to do?

Cut out the immediate pressure and move forward in a measured way.

    2. MAP OUT THE STEPS: List every step you need to take.

Figure backwards from the deadline. If you don’t have one, make one.

Break it down into a to do list.

Check things off as they get completed.

    3. RUT BUSTER: Stuck?

Take a pause and switch gears.

Do something totally different for a while.

    4.  BADS THOUGHTS REPELLENT: Worries, fears and anxiety eat at time.

    Take a positive look and
