    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & DEDICATION PAGE

In creating this book I have no one person to dedicate it to or to acknowledge. I have had a very wonderful and lucrative career due to those who have inspired me over the years. They are my peers, my teachers and mentors who have touched and inspired my life. As I sit at the far end of my career and look back over the years I realize how fortunate and blessed I am to have known the people that have come into my life. Many of the greats have passed on and many are still here and still touching my life. Those that are gone I visualize as dancing and playing music in heaven.  I acknowledge those that are still here and those gone as I have been fortunate enough to have had the finest training, made the best of friends and had a very wonderful career. I has been a life I would not have changed for anything in the world.

My greatest friend in the world and the one who has both been an inspiration and supported me the most is my husband and partner in life and art, Walid Assaf. Thank you, habibi, for believing in me and for being my inspiration in life. I am lucky to have had you in my life all these years.

The rest of my friends, peers, and associates I thank you for everything. It has been a magic carpet ride from here in the US to Lebanon and back. From New England to CA I have enjoyed the view. As our lives change and the dance too, I am just happy for the life I have had and the contacts and memories that live in my heart. I believe the angels guide us to our true calling.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart,

    Morwenna Assaf

    WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK

This book has come into being over years of watching dancers flounder and make wrong choices. Some harmful and money wasters while others just plain bad information. There is no set format or syllabus of training in this dance form so it becomes very difficult to get the correct information if you do not know how to go about it.

This book is not complete by any means. It was written to give you an open honest slant on a dance form that needs the have the truth told about it.

Dance in America has no standards so it is a difficult situation to begin with. There are many forms of dance under the heading belly dance. Some are true to the form and others are far from it. If you are interested in some of these other forms, that, is fine! But please do not call it belly dance. Just as jazz or modern dance, are not belly dance neither are these others. They are detrimental to what the dance really is.

Belly dance is a traditional, cultural dance form that has precepts. It is not something you just do, pick up in a week or so, buy a pretty or not so pretty costume then go perform. We will try to guide you into how to find a teacher, what to look for in any dance teacher, what the business consist of and how to treat it.

Dance is a passion that takes over your life. Do not take it lightly or disrespect it. Now let us move forward!
