About this ebook

Sixteen-year-old Keegan is struggling to keep her huge secret from her friends—she's an elf, descended from a long line of elves that live in secrecy alongside humans.

In elfin society, mates are predetermined but not allowed to meet until they are eighteen.  Against tradition, Keegan's brother Thaddeus told her Rourk's name because his visions warned him she'd need Rourk's protection, especially since Keegan will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves.

Rourk finds himself drawn to Keegan's side every time she thinks his name. He wants to talk to her but remains in the shadows, silently guarding her every time she mentally beckons him. A twist of fate thrusts the two of them together when Rourk is forced to step up his protection and make his presence known.

An ancient prophecy deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle...without losing Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces aligning, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both desire?

This is a series book of 3. I got the first book off Pixel of Ink for free. They have now alerted you to when these are series book!

In this book Keegan struggles with her magic. She falls for her protector. But then tragedy happens. She looses her memory. Now her family struggles with how to help her.

This book is for teens. It's good, not great. I did want to see how this ends. Nothing is worse than reading something to find you have 2 more books left to end it. These are fast reads. It took me a day and half to read this. So great weekend books!

I received this book in exchange for an unbiased honest review!
    Coexist by Julia Crane

This is the first book I have read by Julia Crane. I was astounded!! I feel in love with the characters!! I enjoyed the flow of the story, climax, and pace. I'm glad she kept the same pace through the book even in the battle scene. What an ending!!! I was left craving for the next book in the trilogy. I want to know more!! I loved the background and how the author built the characters and their personalities. I also love the imagery of nature that she portrays. The characters are very realistic. I could not put the book down at all.

This book is about Keegan who is an elf that keeps it secret from all her friends and school due to the secrecy the elves hold dear. Keegan is fixing to turn 17 and buying time until she can meet her true mate by hanging with friends, shopping, and dating. Her brother Thaddeus is a elve seer who sees something happen and sets in motion Keegan knowing the name of her mate Rourk. Rourk watches her from a distance and protects her from coming threats. Will the light army defeat the dark or will they get eradicated? Will Keegan make it to see her 18th bday? I give this book a 5 star review!! I highly recommend this fun read!

good in concept, but another one I could see the ending coming miles away. Things got wrapped up in too neat a package to solve what was supposed to be this EPIC fight, and then just when you think there's a twist, nope, end of book. The unresolved questions were tacked on loosely at the end.

"An elfin child on the side of light will be born with the gift of sight. Light and dark shall meet, and it is unknown who will defeat. Eldest son of a warrior great, it is this child who will determine the elfin fate." ~ The Book of Elfin Prophecy.Keegan could never understand the secrecy of the lives of those in her family and why she remained in the dark until quite recently. She was an elf and so was her entire family. They made efforts to dwell among the human race, unknown to them as was part of being a light elf. If only her friends knew what she really was, but it went against the code of elves to consider revealing her true identity to them. What she was constantly thinking about was her life mate that was chosen for her at birth. She found out his name from her brother, Thaddeus, who gift was being a seer. They were forbidden to meet until they both turned 18, and if they met before their chosen time, their elders implemented a punishment of an added year apart if the rules were disregarded. It wasn't until a chance encounter with a dark elf at a street fair that caused Keegan's world to come crashing wide open and with it that she was the answer to the ancient prophecy concerning the war against dark and light elves for the past 2000 years. She would be the one who could save their people from extinction. So now the real training begins for Keegan, if she can only keep her mind from wandering to Rourk, the name of her life mate. Every time she thinks of his name, he feels compelled to find her wherever she is, but he can never reveal himself to her. He must wait until she turns 18 before he can show himself to her. For now, he remains tortured at the sound of his name in her thoughts. In the novel Coexist by Julia Crane, I was immediately drawn into the world of the elves and their existence with the human race. They each have unique abilities that enable them to help the humans that they live amongst, from being able to see into the future, to moving objects, healing and being super strong. Being a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings series, I knew this young adult novel was sure to engage my interest and it did from the very first page. The world that Julia Crane creates is magical and truly believable. The writing is geared to a young adult audience and keeps the story line moving along so as not to bore the reader with a lot of details that aren't necessary. There is also a unique chemistry that exists between Keegan and Rourk that draws you in and you want to know what their first meeting will be like and if they will break the code that keeps them apart. Truly this is a great book and can't wait to read the rest in Keegan's Chronicles series!I received Coexist by Julia Crane compliments of Reading Addictions Blog Tours for my honest review and have to say if you love fantasy fiction with a touch of suspense and romance, then this is the perfect book for you! I would rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and like the way I could use this book even in a Christian Fantasy Fiction between the contrast of light and darkness at war. I look forward to many more books by this author in the future.

I loved this book. I'm so going to get the other books like right now. I'm not normally a huge fan of YA books, I tend not to read them anymore, because well I'm no long a young adult. I like my books with a little more raunchy than YA can give me, but I saw this one the cover looked cool and it was a free kindle download, so clicked and read in my spare time. Let me tell you how happy I am that I did so, this book was pretty freaking awesome. It's about the Fae!! I LOVE reading about the Fae, and this author's interpretation of the Fae was pretty cool, intense, and engaging. I did have a few little issues with the story, more editing issues than anything else, in the very first page actually the very first sentence, it's states that "Keegan's call echoed in his head" then a few pages (page 4) later while he's watching her, Rourk states "he doesn't even know her name"; um but you just said it a few pages ago, that doesn't make sense. There was another scene were he was told to follow her and an incident happened he called her dad to let him know, then a few pages later when her dad pulled him from the case Rourk wanted to know if he was being punished because her dad figured out what he did, he already told Keegan's dad so the continuity there is off.I also found it odd that the Fae would battle in such a way, it was organized and with rules, it kinda didn't go with the story, like slightly off tune; before the end of the story I was wondering what made the 'light elves' better than the 'dark elves' if they are both on the battlefield wholesale slaughtering each other simply because they were different. That elf showed up for his people just like you showed up for yours. And of course as I continue to read she answers these questions. I knew the last few chapters of the book were going to be heartbreaking from she heard the roar; I knew that the price she would pay would be horrible, and yet I couldn't feel sorry for her, she was a bit of an idiot. I did shed a few tears for Rourk, but I won't tell you why, you have to read to find outIt's a very engaging, quick read, the author managed to build her version of the Fae world without bogging the book down in chapters of information that wasn't pertinent to the story. The way it was written, you didn't feel like this was the first book, more like your peeking to the world of Keegan & Rourk and when you stop reading there story still continues. I loved that the dialogue flowed well, her parents clearly were in love and shared that love with their children. I thought it was awesome that her parents were willing to break the rules about soul~mates and allowed them a great little time together,I can't wait to read the other adventures of Keegan & Rourk and what happens now to their world, once the battle has begun.I hope you enjoy it tooHappy reading

The story line flowed fairly well, and I thought the characters were well developed and fleshed out wonderfully. I like how the female lead characters are strong-willed and not willing to just sit by and let someone else do the work but they actively take part in the outcome of their futures.Llona is such a funny character, I loved to reading the thoughts in her mind and her humor is so witty and just like a normal teenager though she is anything but normal. She is the embodiment of light and there is evil lurking in the shadows waiting to for her. I like the lore that McClellan has created in this work, I have never heard of anything like it that I can remember reading and am intrigued as to how the journey for all the characters will unfold. All the characters are believable,as one can envision them clearly in the mind in all the settings as the authors gives such great details about each one. About the plot, Llona the main character is an orphaned Aura, which is a group of women that light gets passed down from generation to next to guard it from the evil Vyken, who desire to kill them by drinking the blood of an Aura which will make them powerful. Chocked full of interesting things. May her best not friend, as they both are cautious about opening up to other can create fire. Christian her guardian is such a nice male character, he teaches Llona to defend herself even though it is against the rules of their society and could very well cost him his job. Yet, Llona keeps him on his toes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to find out what happens with Christian and Llona.

Keegan is sixteen and an elf. There are certain events that are mapped out for her. Her chosen mate was chosen at birth, they will meet at age 18 and marry and live happily ever after. Keegan finds Rourk's name out before she is supposed to. He watches her. When she thinks of him, he is pulled to her. This makes him the perfect guardian. Her father assigns him to protect her, of course she doesn't know that he is near. War breaks out between the good and the bad elfs. The race of elves could be wiped out if the war continues. Keegan and her brother are key elements to stopping the war and the continuation of their species. I liked the book. I will say that I am extremely frustrated with the ending. Darn it all, if she didn't leave me anxiously awaiting the next book. I have to find out what happens.

My time with this book was fluent, since is not too long I only needed a couple of hours to finish it and right now I'm not sure of how I feel. But let me explain. Yes, the book was super good. Julia's writing is very smooth and she pictures the mind of a teenager really well, specially an elf teenager. But in fact all that Keegan wants is to be normal and to enjoy her live before she meets her chosen one. When that happens she knows everything is going to be perfect with him but until then, why not enjoy her life? But as normal as she wants to be she doesn't know that her friends are nothing but normal themselves...Nevertheless, there's a war coming and her family plays a very important role: Her father, Richard, is the one that will guide the elves of light to battle. Her mother is a healer and her little brother, Thaddeus, is a seer, but not a normal seer: he is the one that will stop the war between light elves and dark elves. But he is only twelve and although he's strong and very mature for his age he is still not sure of how is he going to stop everything... And what is worst, in a vision he saw his own sister dead during the war...So he decides to tell her the name of her chosen one so she will think of him if she is in danger. Rourk, her chosen, oblivious to all this is draged to her every time she thinks of him. The poor guy doesn't stand a chance, we girls if we are in love are used to think of our love every spare moment we have, right? So it doesn't matter if he is busy doing something, he needs to go and look for her.The characters are really cool. Keegan is beautiful but still a nice and sweet girl. Rourk is the type of guy that I would love to have for myself, confident, strong, protective and caring... sigh... Yes, sorry, I need to focus. And then we have Thaddeus, a kid that plays Xbox and tries to stay away from other people because of the visions he has when looking at others, sometimes I felt really sorry for him, it must be very difficult to know bad things are going to happen in your own family and not be able to tell them...And I can forget the love triangle that is not really clear until the end of the book between Keegan, Rourk and Donald, one of Keegan's friend. I really would love to see what happens in the next book. I don't mind Donald but I will be cheering for Rourk!

On the surface, Keegan is your typical 16-year-old girl. She spends her time hanging out with her friends, shopping, texting and dating. But Keegan is an elf. She is really living a secret life, trying to fit in with the humans, all the while just passing the time until she turns 18 so she can meet her chosen mate. I liked this book. I thought this was a fun story. I liked that we got to meet both Keegan and Rourk and see the story from both of their point of views even though they did not get to meet right away. I thought the plot made a great story. The characters were fun and overall likeable. This is the first story I have read focusing on elves, and I liked the elfin world that the author created. One thing I really did not like about this book was the overall length. The book was short, and it just felt too rushed. I would have loved to see the main characters been given more depth. Some of the supporting characters, such as Anna and Donald, seemed almost a passing thought. You get their point of view very quickly one or two times in the story, and that is really all you get to see of them. It would have been nice to have a little more background on them as well. There were too many scenes that also felt too rushed, and I would have liked to have them elaborated on as well. The other thing that bothered me was the very quick changes in point of view. There was no transition between the thoughts of one person to the next. Sometimes I would have to actually back up a couple of sentences as I was reading because all of the sudden I realized that the point of view had changed, and then changed again, without warning. Overall, I liked this story; I just wanted more of it.

Coexist - Julia Crane

Chapter 1

shamrock

Keegan’s call echoed in Rourk’s mind as he finished his last rep. She always came to him when he least expected her; her call always made it hard to focus on anything else. His hands gripped the bar tightly as he tried to ignore the pull of her thoughts. He started a new set, focusing on training, on the cold steel, on the smell of sweat in the room—anything to clear his mind of the girl who possessed him.

Taking a deep breath, he shook his head and unclenched his jaw. He finished up the set quickly, then painfully forced his hands to uncurl from the bar. The tips of his fingers were bloodless—a fine metaphor for how she usually made him feel. He wiped his face and tossed the towel in the bin. The rest of the workout would have to wait.

Using one of his secondary gifts, he closed his eyes and visualized her face. It took no effort for him to picture her. Rourk zoomed in like a high-powered lens, bringing her into focus. He smiled. She was at her favorite spot, a private corner of paradise on her parents’ land.

Her beautiful auburn hair blended in with the fall leaves that surrounded her. Her pale green, ankle-length dress flowed ethereally around her body, making her an oasis in the rust-colored woods.

A smile spread across her face as she inspected a rock from the creek; Rourk laughed when she slipped it into her camera bag.

The first time she had thought his name—several years ago—it had taken him hours to sense her location. When the pull came now, it took just twenty minute for him to hike through some familiar woods. Time had strengthened their bond.

Grabbing his bag, he jumped in his old, beat-up truck and headed towards his chosen, probably driving a little faster than necessary. When he heard her call, he could never get there fast enough.

He drove as close as he could, then hastily climbed the rugged terrain. The dirt had the loose feel of earth unpacked by human feet; with every step, he sank a little, hindering his progress. Even when he wasn’t training, Rourk spent a lot of his time in the woods. The forest was like a second home to him.

The sun sparkled through the canopy above him, illuminating the path he forged through the trees, though it didn’t offer any warmth in the cool afternoon. It was a great day for photos, so Rourk wasn’t surprised that she had brought her camera out. A branch scraped him across the face and he impatiently pushed it to the side, hardly caring whether it had left a mark. He just wanted to reach her.

Finally, he reached the top, bursting through the tree line and into pure daylight. His heart pounded. He could sense that she was near.

Rourk stood rigid, his lean body tensed as he looked over the edge of the jagged cliff. Why do I do this to myself? I shouldn’t even be here. She’s killing me. I have no self-control.

Elfin elders used complicated methods to arrange ideal marriages between young elves. They kept the formula on a need-to-know basis, so he would never know how they chose the auburn-haired beauty for him. Of all the many non-humans in this world, his kind held their secrets closest. But no matter how or why, Rourk felt grateful just to have her.

The elders chose an elf’s lifemate at birth, but lifemates could not meet until they both turned eighteen. Ordinarily, neither knew their other half until they came of age. The elders of long ago had decided it was better that way, since the bond could be all-consuming. They wanted their children to have a normal childhood. Rourk had always felt comforted by knowing that his other half waited out there.

So how did he find her?

Someone had told her his name, so now his chosen pulled him closer to her each time she thought of him, as involuntarily as breathing. At first he resisted with ease, but as he got closer to eighteen, curiosity got the better of him. Sometimes he wished he’d never answered her call, so he wouldn’t have to endure the agony of waiting now.

He loved seeing her—even if it made waiting painful.

Rourk focused attention back on his chosen. The water washed around her feet as she stood on the rocks, camera in hand as usual. One minute, she skipped across the rocks like a child and the next, she stopped, a look of total concentration on her face. Then she started snapping photos.

Staring at her, Rourk squatted and rested his hands on his knees, wondering what she saw through her lens. He watched as she jumped from a rock and slipped, landing on another. Her arms flailed as she almost fell into the water.

His heart lurched. He needed to protect her; he tensed to jump in after her. Then her laugh echoed up to him like music and her face broke into a huge grin. She steadied herself, taking more photos. Rourk relaxed, content to stand and watch her for hours.

Rourk didn’t even know her name, but he knew he’d never seen anyone so magnificent in his life. Her wavy hair glistened in the sunlight. She had a delicate, round face with large, blue-green eyes and full lips. With her cheeks flushed from the cold fall air, she reminded him of a porcelain doll. He knew that her looks deceived; her bold, daring eyes gave her away. She constantly observed her surroundings. Rourk smiled to himself; soon they would be together.

It took a lot of self-control not to approach her, but Rourk would not break the rules. Many decades before, the elders implemented a punishment of an added year apart lifemates met early.

Rourk didn’t know if he could take an extra year without his chosen. In any case, his military upbringing had given Rourk a healthy respect for rules. He had long ago accepted that they were in place for a reason, and he had to be patient. Their time would come, even though she was over a year younger than he, which meant he would have to wait longer than he would like.

He pondered all this as he watched her pack up, lovingly storing her camera away in its bag while her hair fell softly over her face. When she disappeared down the path to her house, Rourk sighed, turned and left.

Keegan sat at her small, black desk looking through the photos she’d taken that morning. Her hair had been driving her crazy for the last hour, falling over her face with nearly every movement, so she pulled it into a bun. Securing it with a pencil, she continued to study the shots. She noticed a few decent ones she could add to her Tumblr page; she had a small circle of followers there who seemed to enjoy her pictures as much as she loved taking them. She loved photography. Life was nothing more than a series of moments and a picture could capture that moment.

Her moments often felt empty. Sighing, she turned her head to gaze out the window, her chin resting in her hand as she let her mind wander. If she had Rourk, maybe she would feel…more fulfilled. She knew nothing about her partner but his name. A couple of years ago, her brother Thaddeus, a seer, had told her that she should think of Rourk’s name if she ever felt she was in danger.

Of course, she thought his name all the time, even when she wasn’t in danger. She loved the sound of it: Rourk. She pictured him as a powerful warrior like her father, but she wouldn’t know for sure until they met. He could turn out to be a seer like her brother or a healer like her mother. He might have any of the various elfin powers. She didn’t care what kind of gift he had; she just didn’t want to wait any longer.

Keegan smiled, leaning back in her seat to prop one bare foot on the edge of her chair. Most humans automatically imagined elves as Santa Claus’s little helpers with enormous ears and fuzzy green tights. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Seriously, she had never met an elf that worked for Santa.

Evolution allowed them to blend in with the humans, though females tended to be smaller than average—mostly a couple of inches taller or shorter than five feet. They did have the pointed ears, but in a cute way, and not overly large like those in most mythology projects. Most of their ancestors came from Ireland, so the elves tended to have reddish hair.

She certainly didn’t think her room looked like a storybook elf’s room. Two pale grey walls complemented the vivid turquoise of the other two. She had artistically arranged framed posters of her favorite bands and several of her favorite snapshots all around the room. A fluffy purple comforter and four fat pillows decorated the bed, where she also kept a few of her childhood stuffed animals.

Most of all, she loved the light—lots of daylight from her windows. Her room felt her safe haven, almost as much as her spot in the woods.

The sound of the door opening downstairs startled her out of her thoughts. Her parents wouldn’t be home this early and her pesky brother had gone to Sam’s house. She closed her eyes and pictured the front door. What she saw brought a smile to her face. It was Anna, one of her best friends.

Anna had been trying to sneak up on Keegan since they first met in the fourth grade. Keegan made it a point of pride—and stubbornness—never to let her; it was a game and Keegan liked to win. It drove Anna crazy, but luckily she was too laid-back to do anything about it. Keegan debated with herself whether or not to let Anna succeed just this one time. I don’t think so. She smiled to herself.

She focused her mind and felt the familiar tingling throughout her body. Now she was in no hurry—Anna couldn’t see her. She had to be careful not to be caught, but invisibility tended not to attract attention. Personally, she thought her invisibility was the coolest ability in the family, but her mom just thought it was ironic, since Keegan always wanted to be the center of attention.

Down in the kitchen, Anna wistfully looked around. She loved coming to Keegan’s house. It always felt so inviting; their home radiated a certain calm. The soothing sound of the rushing water from the massive wall fountain and the energy from the crystals collected by Keegan’s mother soothed her the moment Anna stepped through the door. A sense of serenity washed over her.

The house felt empty of inhabitants. Only the chirping of birds outside the open window broke the steady hum of the refrigerator. Six placemats perfectly spaced around a lovely centerpiece of wildflowers Keegan’s mom must have picked decorated the large, clean wooden table. Anna put a hand to the tabletop and closed her eyes, allowing the peace of the home to overtake her. She needed it.

Trying not to laugh, Keegan crept up behind Anna, who seemed oblivious. Her best friend looked completely off in space. Keegan focused her mind again and, amid the tingling, she materialized before tapping her friend’s shoulder. Gotcha!

Anna turned and laughed, feigning surprise.

Oh Keegan, I always know when you’re there. If you only knew that I have secrets of my own. Anna had known for years about Keegan’s family. One of her friends had the ability to spot other creatures of the light or dark. But they all knew how elves liked to keep their secrets, so Anna never let on that she knew. She figured someday Keegan would tell her on her own.

As usual, Anna had outlined her green eyes in heavy eyeliner—blue today—to highlight her long, thick lashes. With shimmery pink lip gloss on her pencil-lined lips, she looked like a rock star.

Keegan glanced over her eccentric friend’s outfit to see what style she’d adopted for the day. Her bangs, which she habitually pushed to the side, were purple today beneath a black top hat that only Anna could pull off. The rest of the day’s ensemble consisted of a grey tank top, a blue cardigan, and a pink skirt with bright yellow flowers that came just above her knees. To pull the look together, she wore sparkly silver Converse shoes.

You know I hate you, Keegan said with a grin, bumping her best friend’s shoulder playfully with her own.

Anna stared at Keegan indignantly, her skinny arms crossed. Why would you hate me?

Who else could pull off that outfit and make it look natural? Keegan said.

Anna gave a little curtsy and giggled. Thank you.

You’re not going to believe what happened today! Anna continued, grinning from ear to ear and jumping up and down so that her skirt flounced. Her shoes caught the sunlight shining through the window, sending sparkles across the walls of the kitchen like a disco ball.

Playing along, Keegan bounced up and down, too. Let me guess. Xavier finally asked you out?

I wish! For a brief moment, sadness replaced the excited look on Anna’s face. Xavier had been her friend since childhood. Anna had recently realized her feelings for him were more than friendship, but, sadly, he didn’t return her feelings.

All right, just tell me what’s got you so excited, Keegan said.

Well, when I was walking to the bus, I saw a sign for a New Age fair tomorrow! Anna jumped up and down. It’s a sign. We must go!

Keegan grinned. Anna, you seriously believe in all that nonsense?

Looking shocked Anna replied, Certainly! There has to be something more to this world than meets the eye.

If you only knew Anna, there is so much more to this world than humans know, Keegan thought. However, she was not about to reveal that knowledge.

Don’t forget to call Lauren and fill her in, Keegan told her.

But, of course, Anna said, pressing a hand to her chest innocently. If there were only the two of us we couldn’t be called the three amigos.

Keegan rolled her eyes, laughing.

The girls popped some popcorn and chatted in front of the television for a while, muting the commercials and blaring the reality show they both loved. When she had to leave, Anna gave Keegan a hug and headed out.

While the girls watched TV, Keegan’s mom, Emerald, had come home from taking Warrick to the park. Now she worked on her laptop while Warrick pushed a toy truck around under the table.

Don’t stay up too late, she warned as Keegan passed the kitchen.

I won’t. Keegan rolled her eyes. Where’s Dad?

Camp. He’ll be home late. She flicked her blue eyes up to her daughter. I mean it. Go to bed at a decent time. What did you have for dinner?

I had mac and cheese earlier.

Any leftovers? Her mom raised an eyebrow.

Nope. Keegan made her way to the staircase.

With a little time to kill before she got tired, Keegan decided to look through her photos again. Her favorite, a photo of a leaf blowing by itself in the wind, reminded her of herself. She often felt all alone, just floating along. As much as she loved hanging out with
