About this ebook

The Clubhouse Gang, is an account of how three close knit boys aged 7 to 10 spent there summer holidays in the year 1950. Across the globe some countries were at war. At home life was easy, crime was low; boys were un-tethered. They explored, they built, they searched, they learned; sometimes the hard way. The hardships made them different; they developed skills and character that helped them face the world. This story continues into our teen years.

    Chapter 1

    Introduction

The year is 1950, and North Korea invades South Korea.  The Great Depression is only a faint memory, and a gallon of gasoline costs eighteen cents.  James Dean becomes well known from doing a Pepsi commercial.

Most of the moms are home bodies; only a few have taken up part-time work.  No one locks their doors at night.  Most homes have only the basic necessities, nothing worth stealing.

This is a time when children spend most of the daylight hours out of the house and return only when mom calls, hunger calls or it gets too dark to see.

Here is a rendition of how a few close knit boys aged seven to ten spend their summer holiday time together.

The political center of activities is the club house; this is the hub where most every activity starts from.

    Chapter 2

    The Clubhouse

The club house is located above dad’s single car garage situated next to the back alley. The attic is taken over by the local neighbourhood kids and has became known as the Clubhouse.

There is a small attic access door on the yard side of the building.  The attic has a two step roof, one much higher than the other.  One has to enter the lower roofed attic in order to reach the main area of the larger attic, a distance of about ten feet.  To access the attic a wood ladder was constructed and attached to the end of the building where the smaller door allowed access.

As you enter through the small attic doorway, you crawl on your belly over some well placed boards above the ceiling joists; this is the only way to get to the other side of the split attic.  It is dark with only a slight bit of light filtering in from the open doorway.  The rafters in the shadows appear like giant ribs just above your head, it feels like crawling into the belly of a whale.
