Gary Hawkes

Gary Hawkes spent most of his child hood years on Whidbey Island in western Washington, aside from three years spent in Japan during his mother and step-father's Navy deployment. The experience of living in Japan and calling that country home and then moving back to the U.S., had quite the effect on the young aspiring writer; a unique perspective on what it means to be an American.Early on however, Gary's interests were mostly in music and sports. It was periodic encouragements from family and specifically a high school teacher that spurred Gary to pursue writing more diligently later on. Most of the writer's early work were simple short stories and some poetry.Several years after graduating college he published his first collection of poems and followed quickly after with several more books of poetry and short stories. Currently living in Washington State.

    Mid-Life Rant

Why don’t you ever listen to me, it says,

Part divine, part mime, giving conflicting advice on the proper ways

Stuck in the middle, dancing to the rhythms of the Devil’s fiddle

While still adhering to the teachings of God’s riddles

Longing for a better role in this too long day

    Fuck anything that moves

Or be kind and generous, helping tensions sooth

    Live only for today

Or work toward a better tomorrow each and every day

    Plunder the planet’s resources

Or use more efficient and renewable fuel sources

Take anything that makes you feel good

Or live straight edge like an Angel would

Didn’t expect to still be here

Thought I’d be long dead by now from all the tobacco, drugs and beer

    I have a purpose although it’s unclear

God’s voice I can only occasionally hear

    So my journey continues

Is God’s love enough to overcome the blues

    Find a righteous group
