The No-BS Guide To The Law of Attraction - Franklin Farkington
Chapter 1 ~ The Law of Attraction
We receive exactly what we expect to receive. John Holland
So what exactly is the Law of Attraction. If you Googled it and found Wikipedia, it would state the following:
The law of attraction is the name given to the belief that like attracts like
and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results. This belief is based upon the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from pure energy
, and the belief that like energy attracts like energy.
The Wikipedia entry is quite primitive. It goes to state an example that if you wished that there were a $100 bill in your wallet, then the Law of Attraction would confirm it, and magically there would be $100 bill in your wallet. Wikipedia further states that the Law of Attraction is not scientifically validated. What a bunch of bosh! Even a five year old child knows that the Universe doesn't operate in that manner. There is no magical wand to wave and money appears. It goes against the Laws of Nature. There is no magic, or even religion in the Law of Attraction. Let me re-state that for emphasis: There is no magic or religion associated with the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction belongs in the temporal part of the Universe—the physical world. It does begin in the mind, but it translates and operates in the physical world, obeying the laws of Physics and the laws of Nature.
So how does the Law of Attraction really work? You will get as many answers as people you ask. So let's cover some the basics.
One of the first attempts at defining the Law of Attraction was by William Walker Atkinson in 1906. The Victorian Era was in full swing with its class system in England, and that class system created huge disparities in income, money and quality of life. Basically, the upper classes had all of the money and a wonderful quality of life. The social structures at the time preached a clever message that one should be content with their lot in life, work hard for their masters, and never covet anything of theirs, like their money. Heavens forbid that the lower classes would revolt against the gentry like they did in France and behead the King. No, it was better for the Church, politicians and authority to preach a moral message of staying put and staying poor. One of the messages was that money was the root of all evil. That message was so ingrained, that many today believe it, and think that by desiring money through the Law of Attraction or otherwise, they are committing some kind of sin, or moral or ethical transgression. Let's talk about money.
Before we go any further, I would like to expound on the link between money in the quality of life. I have heard many, many times that Money is the root of all evil
. You can look it up in the Bible, but the verse in the King James Bible (1 Timothy 6:10) reads: For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
As you can see, it is not money but rather love of Money that the Bible says is the root of all evil. If you are a Christian, or even if you are not, you would tend to do what some experts call scope-creep. The thinking can sound quite logical. It goes like this: Because love of money is supposedly the root of all evil, then wanting money somehow implies that you love it and wanting money is wrong. This is scope creep. The scope of the original Biblical teaching is that if you love money, then you will do unethical or immoral things to get it. As the verse says, some while coveting the money, they will err in the faith, commit sin and pierce themselves with many sorrows. Period. Some people will do that. It is quite a severe approach. But any elementary logic class will show you that that statement has nothing to do with wanting money for a better life. It has nothing to do with wanting more money in your life. It has nothing to say about money being evil, or having money is evil. And in the strictest sense, not all people who love money will err. Just some people will. All that it means, is that be careful in wanting money so desperately that you will do bad things to get it. And once you get it, you might do bad things with it.
Now let's get back to William Walker Atkinson. He was the first to publish the idea called New Thought, where one could escape the clutches of what life dealt you with a new way of thinking. He wrote a book called "Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World, where he said that
like attracts like". If you are positive, you will garner positive things through the positive vibrations that you emanate, and if you are negative, only negativity will follow you. By this time, it was known that in the science of Physics, if you generated two waves or vibrations that met, at the point where the highest point of the waveform met with another one, the wave form would produce a new wave of energy that was the sum of the two vibrations, while if the lowest point of the waveform met the high point, they would cancel each other out. The whole idea was to create constructive interference as it was called, of positive vibrations.
Atkinson was building on the works of Thomas Troward, who was the first to state that a thought precedes any physical form. For example, if you want to fold a paper airplane for example, you must first think of how a paper airplane might look and you consciously start thinking of it before you can fold one. He wrote "the action of Mind plants that nucleus which, if allowed to grow undisturbed, will eventually attract to itself all the conditions necessary for its manifestation in outward visible form". Atkinson used this germ of an idea in his book.
Using Atkinson's work, a woman named Elizabeth Towne, published articles about New Thought. One of the articles was written by a gentleman called Bruce MacLelland who tied religion into the Law of Attraction for the first time. His thesis was that God is a loving God, and he created the Earth in abundance for all life to prosper. In spite of original sin, the Earth is an abundant place, and since we are built to the image and likeness of God (in the words of MacLelland) we deserve to be prosperous because God wants us to. Many preachers still preach this today. He created a new genre of books called and his seminal work was called "Prosperity Through Thought Force. The book can be summarized in one sentence which is the underlying principle of the Law of Attraction. Simply,
You are what you think, not what you think you are." In other words, you can think your way to health, wealth and happiness.
Stating the principle of the Law of Attraction is easy. Millions of words have been written as to how to apply those words. Everyone who has put pen to paper on the topic has a recipe of how you should think your way to attracting what you want.
The first big hit book on the Law of Attraction was "The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles in 1910. This book was the basis of the movie
The Secret". In the book, Wattles says that the Law of Attraction is a science similar to the science discoveries of Marconi or Thomas Edison. His central belief in writing the book, is stated by himself. This is his core philosophy:
Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.
This is also one of my core philosophies. You cannot live a truly significant life, unless you have the resources to do so.
Wattles goes on to state that everyone has a right to be rich, just as everyone has a right to be free. Wattles was a believer in religion, and like the man in the Bible who made the most of the talents given to him, Wattles believed that there was no greater service to humanity to make the most of yourself, and that included getting rich.
In his book, Wattles goes on to assert that there is a science to getting rich. He pointed out that in certain fields where almost everyone got rich, there were people who didn't. The obverse was true. There are fields where almost no one gets rich, and yet some make millions in those fields. I can recall one story from the news where a person became a millionaire from chicken manure.
A man ran a large chicken farm. He lived near the border of Sweden in the Soviet Union. The chickens produced an immense amount of manure. He could spread only so much on the field. However, across the border in Sweden, the weather was cold and the soil was poor. He traded loads of chicken manure to be used as fertilizer in the Swedish farmers fields. Instead of take cash, he took used cars in payment. Back in the USSR (sorry for the pun on the Beatles song), there was a shortage of cars of any kind. He could get whatever he asked for a used car, especially if it wasn't a cheap Russian Lada. A Volvo was like gold. He parlayed excess unwanted chicken crap into a million dollars in a state where private enterprise was frowned upon. Riches are to be found wherever the Law of Attraction takes you—even if it is to a pile of chicken crap.
The reasoning behind Wattles' book is he believed that God provides everything and can deliver whatever we focus on. We just have to know how to do it. In his book, the concept of Original Substance is introduced. It is formless and it is movement and that movement can translate into physical things. It doesn't happen automatically and magically, but it sets in the motion what is required to manifest it. The prime mover, or the first force is Thought.
Wattles expounded the following arguments about why the Law of Attraction works:
The Universe desires that you have everything that you want to have.
Nature is friendly to your plans.
Everything is naturally for you.
You must make up your mind that all of this is true.
There is one catch however. The catch, according to Wattles is that your purpose should harmonize with the purpose that is in All. The All is capitalized so it is presumed that it is God's plan and one must not do evil with your desires. This again goes back to the love of money idea as previously discussed. Wattles himself clarifies this by saying that you must want Real Life, not mere pleasure of sensual gratification.
By now, you should be getting the gist of the Law of Attraction. Let's carry on a bit with Wattles ideas. He believed that one should engage in some sort of activity that brings in money, and one should give everyone more value in usage than one takes from them in cash. He gives the example of selling a $500 masterpiece to an Eskimo is useless for him, but selling him a $50 gun gives him greater use value because the Eskimo can use the gun to hunt his food.
Wattles says that one should get into the right business, or follow the thought process to increase your business. One must not use the Law of Attraction as a weapon, trying to bring harm to others. Wattles believed so firmly in the Law of Attraction, that he believed that thought power alone could be weaponized to use against people.
One of the key elements that he preached, was Gratitude. One must be grateful to God before one can become rich. This idea of Gratitude implies that there is an Accountant of the Universe (in Wattles case it was God, but in other writer's works, the Universe somehow kept track of who was grateful) for the bounty of the Universe. All tomes have the theme of an air of mysticism to the Law of Attraction.
Napoleon Hill who was the most successful proponent of the Law of
