EXCERPT
“When I look at you,” Jayden continued, “all I can think about is holding you and kissing you. I know that’s not actually appropriate, especially given our situation, but I’m putting you on notice. When all of this has been sorted, we’re going to revisit this conversation. That is... if you’re interested.”

“You know,” Cybele said softly. “When I told you that I slept really well, I was lying to you. I didn’t sleep well. Not at all.”

He looked worried. “Did I scare you with my confession? I suppose I should have waited for a few days, until I’ve proven to you that you and Ronan can trust me.”

She smiled. “The reason I couldn’t sleep is because all I could think about is that you were only just a few feet away. I thought about just how easy it would be to creep down the hallway to your room, slip in and slide right into bed with you,” she said so softly, like she was afraid he would do something that would make her want to get those words back. Jayden was suddenly sure she wasn’t lying. He was also sure she hadn’t confessed anything like that to a common human being. A man, or even a man that she liked.

This time, it was Jayden who smiled. “Really?”

“Yes. That’s what I thought about for hours. So if you’re asking me if I want to talk about this further at a more appropriate time, then yes, I would.”

    CHAPTER ONE

DINNER THAT NIGHT was pretty simple but Jayden was a decent cook. They enjoyed steak, salad, baked potatoes, and some dinner rolls he had found stashed in the freezer. Stella was excellent about keeping the kitchen stocked with anything that they might need or just suddenly crave. He was also pretty handy with a grill so he had decided to barbeque the steaks.

This gave Cybele and Ronan a chance to spend some time in an outdoor environment that didn't include a hot pavement in an unsafe area. Instead, they were outside on his kitchen deck. Ronan had wandered down into the grass below.

There was so much land and forest surrounding Jayden's estate that he may as well have lived in a world of his own. The grass was bright green, lush and perfect. Ronan was having fun just running around playing with Caesar and Brutus, Jayden's two Dobermans. No one would know by looking at this tableau that those two dogs would turn deadly with one simple command from Jayden or his guards.

Otherwise, they were both very loveable and playful. Jayden wanted them to get used to Ronan because they would protect him at all costs if there was any real danger.

Cybele was relaxing on a wooden chaise lounge with a glass of wine watching both Jayden and Ronan. She couldn't remember when she had ever felt so at home and comfortable-and drinking real, expensive wine. If she let her mind expand a bit, she could easily believe that this was her home.

Sneaking a glance at Jayden, she felt that shiver go through her body once more. It was a lot like the feeling that she had when he touched her shoulder earlier.

    She sighed deeply.

It had been years, if ever, since she had been genuinely attracted to a man. In those last few years, the only men she had interacted with were those she needed to run away from. Most of the time, she had hated to be around them.

Jayden was different. He had only exhibited kindness to her-although she had caught a look or two that she felt were a bit heated.

He had the strangest, yet most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. There seemed to be a light behind them almost.

And his hair. He couldn't possibly be old enough for his hair to be so silver, and it wasn't a color that came with age. His body was just short of amazing. She couldn't look at him without wanting to touch him. It was almost as if she could feel his muscles rippling under her fingertips.

Okay, that was not going to work! She really had to stop thinking that way. But it was kind of hard to do that when she was being treated to him using those upper arms to cook their steaks.

Jayden could feel Cybele's eyes on his back as he turned their steaks over the hot coals. He wasn't quite able to read her thoughts clearly but the energy he was sensing from her was easy to understand.

He was a bit surprised-and understandably elated-that she could still be attracted to a man after all she's been through. It was simple to see that she obviously didn't appreciate just what a beautiful woman she was. Even with her dirt smudged face and too big clothes, her beauty had still been evident. Once Elys and Charlotte had cleaned her up
