    Chapter One

    It was a peaceful day.

It started out sunny, the skies devoid of cloud cover and the birds twittering happily in their own little world. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was a school day, it would have been perfect. Unfortunately, here I was, dragging my unwilling feet in the direction of Earth’s very own purgatory. It’s not like school was bad or anything. I had decent grades, a fairly acceptable social life and decent rapport with my teachers, which was actually a lot more than any of my peers, could boast. The thing was, I found it boring. Just like every normal high schooler out there, I suppose. But I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I could be out there, doing something better instead of multiplying numbers over and over again just to make sure we could multiply them.

    Alex!

The voice came from behind me. I knew who it was the moment I heard it though.

    Hey Reg.

I turned around. Reginald was tall for someone our age. If it wasn’t for the fact that he and I were childhood friends and that Reg had brown hair instead of blonde, I’d be thinking of him as one of those stereotypic blonde jock bullies you see on cartoons. Despite his popularity, he still prefers to hang out with me rather than his teammates or his fans. He’s a cool guy like that.

Any plans after school, your Majesty? he grinned at me. I just shook my head. It’s been his nickname for me ever since we were kids. My mom was a historian and my dad had a degree in Creative Writing. Put that together and you get me, a weird kid named Alexander who grew up with his mother telling him, You’ll be great one day, just like your namesake.

    Alexander the Great.

The moment I was able to read without help, his story was the first one I decided to study. And in the shadow of all those achievements, of conquering nearly the entirety of the known world, of becoming the paragon that all military commanders after his time looked up to, I felt insignificant. As if whatever I did wouldn’t even get close to being considered living up to the name.

So here I am, wishing that I could be doing something more relevant than studying math and
