About this ebook
The tools and technique used in the Design of Experiments (DOE) have been used around the world to solve seemingly impossible problems in science and engineering.
The majority of engineers and scientists have had little exposure to this important technique and this book has been written with the authors 30 years experience in practical design of experiments aimed squarely at practising engineers and scientists rather than statisticians and mathematicians.
Practical Design of Experiments takes a graphical approach using a software tool called Minitab.
The author concentrates on each step of using the technique with explanations along the way of each decision point.
Readers will find this guide both practical and useful, with copious screenshots of the software in use and clear precise explanations.
The emphasis is on quantifying the effects of a number of variables before optimising them.
Key points:
* Provides tools and techniques for practical business and process improvement.
* Introduces screenshots and explanations for each step of designing an experiment, carrying out an experiment and then analysing the results.
* A worked example, again explained step by step with advice from the author at each step.
This book will be extremely useful to engineers and scientists who want to solve quality, process and manufacturing problems quickly and easily.

Practical Design of Experiments - Colin Hardwick
Introduction
This guide has been produced specifically for engineers to use as a practical tool in devising suitable experiments with which to solve real world problems. It does not discuss the history or mathematics of the technique except where absolutely necessary to illustrate an important point.
Design of Experiments is an incredibly powerful tool in the right hands and will cut down significantly on the normal type of trial and error style experiments that are found routinely whenever engineers are trying to solve a problem!
In this guide a software package called Minitab® Statistical Software is used to design experiments and analyse the results. You can download a free 30 day trial at www.minitab.com
Minitab is just one software package that will do this but it is my preferred package simply because I believe it to be the best available – both for ease of use and accuracy of analysis. I have included a number of screenshots taken from Minitab where such screenshots aid explanation.
Traditional teaching of DoE is generally poor in my opinion. This is for two principal reasons;
The teaching is carried out by a mathematician or statistician, who blinds the student with complex formulae and makes the subject seem far more complex than necessary. Result; students who will forever decry the technique as too complex or too time consuming to be of any practical use in the real engineering world.
The teaching is carried out by a real world engineer, who does not have sufficient grasp of the subject matter to convey it succinctly and simply. Result; students who don’t believe that the technique actually works and therefore steer clear of it in preference of what they know best – changing one factor at a time and testing the result. I will show later that in the vast majority of cases this is quite simply the wrong approach.
So, work through the text, don’t worry it’s short, and use Minitab to try out the various examples. You will quickly see just how powerful this technique is in practice and how easy it is to use.
What is Design of Experiments?
So what is Design of Experiments
or DoE as it is known in its frequently abbreviated form?
Basically it is a controlled experiment in which the experimenter is interested in both quantifying and optimising the effect of a number of input variables on one or more output variables.
Let’s define two aspects here;
The input variables causing the variation are called factors
.
The output variables being measured are called the responses
.
When Should It Be Used?
In engineering and science, the most common reasons for using a DoE are;
To identify the factors which most affect the responses
To identify those factors which act together on a particular response – these are called interactions
To determine the optimum settings of factors which satisfy a number of required responses
There are a number of other reasons but let’s keep it simple for
