CHAPTER 1: CLUES FOR THE TREASURE HUNT

Ted’s eyes opened suddenly. Sunlight was streaming in the window. It was morning—the morning that Uncle Jeff was coming!

Ted jumped out of bed and started to get dressed. He didn’t want to be late today! Uncle Jeff was coming at 8:00 o’clock, but he wouldn’t be staying long. If Ted wasn’t ready, he would miss him!

After he pulled on his pants and shirt, he started to look around for some socks. He looked under his bed, but didn’t see any. He only saw a half eaten sandwich he had hidden from his mother.

Next he looked in his messy closet. After searching under a bunch of toys and finding more half eaten sandwiches, he finally found some socks. They were under the soccer ball he liked to kick around with his Uncle Jeff.

A lump came suddenly into Ted’s throat as he looked at the soccer ball. He wouldn’t be able to kick it around with Uncle Jeff anymore. Not after today. Uncle Jeff was leaving town. This would be his last visit for a long time.

Ted! came his mother’s voice from the hall. Are you up yet? Uncle Jeff will be here any minute! He doesn’t have much time before he has to catch his plane, you know.

I’ll be right there, mom, Ted called out. But suddenly he didn’t feel like hurrying anymore. His favorite uncle was being shipped out with his army unit, going overseas to some country called Afghanistan. He would be gone for six whole months! It was worse than the time his five-year-old sister Suzy put his DS in a big jar of honey!

Suddenly Ted heard the doorbell ring. Uncle Jeff was here already! He heard the door open, and could hear the familiar loud voice of Uncle Jeff booming all through the house. How strange it was going to be once Uncle Jeff was gone. The house would be too quiet!

Quickly Ted finished dressing and then ran down the hall to the living room. There was Uncle Jeff dressed in his green army uniform, with a big green army bag at his side. He beamed at Ted the minute he saw him.

There’s my favorite Pikachu! called out Uncle Jeff. Pikachu was the name of a Pokemon character that Ted liked. Uncle Jeff often called Ted that.

Uncle Jeff walked across the room in two steps on his long legs and scooped Ted up into his arms. He tossed him high up into the air like a sack of potatoes. Ted laughed in spite of his sadness. ‘Sack of potatoes’ was a game he and Uncle Jeff often played on his visits. Even though Ted was now 8 years old, he still loved to play it.

We’re certainly going to miss having you around, said Ted’s dad from his wheelchair across the room. Although Ted’s dad and Uncle Jeff were brothers and looked a lot alike, they were very different. Uncle Jeff was big, and had a lot of muscles and endless energy. Ted’s dad was quiet and soft spoken, and had to stay all the time in his wheelchair. He couldn’t play soccer or anything.

Well, I’m going to miss you all, too, boomed Uncle Jeff. But I’ll only be gone six months. That isn’t long at all!

Ted frowned. It seemed like an awful long time to him.

Listen, Pikachu, said Uncle Jeff, turning back to him, I’ve got something for you! He reached his long arms into his army bag and searched around inside. Finally, he pulled out a metal box. It was about the size of a soccer ball, only it was square. On the front were a bunch of number buttons like on a telephone. Uncle Jeff handed it to Ted. It was heavy!

You know what this is? said Uncle Jeff mysteriously. Ted shook his head ‘no.’

It’s a safe, said Uncle Jeff. Like they have in banks to keep money, only smaller.

Ted looked at the metal box closely. Was there money in it?

As if Uncle Jeff had read his thoughts,
