Prologue
Once upon a time in a town very much like your own….
Apprentice wanted: Penchant for sleight of hand, open minded, and willing to accept discipline. Only serious inquiries, please.—Madame Madeline
Some things are not what they seem.
The audience’s eyes may first be drawn to the tarantula—electric blue—its front legs pawing the air for attention. The creature paces the man’s shoulder, seemingly to eye the crowd. Then the magic of the storyteller’s voice enthralls as he spins his tale as wicked as a spider’s web to trap its victims. A tale of deceit, desire, and death.
Take a simple job-wanted ad,
Nicodemus says, his voice booming out over those in attendance. He holds up a tattered newspaper as an example. Where the applicant gets much more than he bargained for. Listen up, and I’ll share the story.
Chapter One
The wording of the ad made Sven’s cock grow harder, and he shifted himself to the side. Between his fingers, he shuffled the paper back and forth, feeling its texture. He reread the ad on ThievesList. Sleight of hand. Discipline. Madame.
In the olden days, professionals took on an apprentice to teach them a trade. In exchange for some dirty work and backbreaking tasks, they’d come away with valuable experience. His schooling was going nowhere. The job market looked bleak, and the student loans continued to rack up. Maybe he could learn a job and start making some cash.
It wasn’t like he’d be shoeing horses or cleaning chimneys. A master thief? There had to be some sort of catch. Wouldn’t the police have access to these job listings, too? He wrote a brief cover letter, attached his résumé, and hit submit. What could it hurt?
Madeline growled in frustration. None of the candidates she’d interviewed so far would do. No creativity. No backbone. And that last mousy chick could never take being lashed with the whip. Lucky for her, Madeline didn’t want to waste any energy; otherwise, she could have turned her into a real rodent.
She spread the applicants’ folders out on her desk, and pushed those she deemed unworthy off into the trash. They landed with a satisfying crash. Oh, her assistant Lucy would pick them out and refile them at the end of the day, but the symbolic act alone made her feel better.
One more interviewee left. She opened Sven Stephenson’s manila folder. Tacked to the left-hand side was a color photo. He hadn’t turned it in, but the background checks included images from Facebook accounts.
He wore faded denim jeans, slung low on his hips, and no shirt. She drank in his pecs, thick arms, and shoulders so wide they begged to be called strapping.
He appeared every bit of the Norwegian heritage his name implied: blond, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. She imagined striping his bare ass, the muscles quivering beneath her touch.
If he possessed half as many brains as he did muscles, he might prove to be the one. A free thinker was preferable, but it was a fine balance to discover one also willing to take orders.
Finally, there was the issue of shifting. Could his body—so big—achieve the results she wanted? Maybe.
The grandfather clock out in the main office chimed five o’clock, and Madeline checked her cell phone. The antique she’d inherited from her grandmother was ringing early, and she’d have to remember to reset it before leaving for the night. Mr. Stephenson had a few minutes left to make it to his appointment on time, and one thing for sure, she was a stickler for being on time. Her favorite punishment? Oh, the amount of time late multiplied by three to come up with the amount of strikes they’d receive.
Just this morning, she’d had Lucy bent over her desk, dress tucked into her waistband, and panties yanked down around her ankles, for being late to the office. Warmth pooled between Madeline’s thighs as she recalled Lucy’s pleas for leniency because of a traffic accident. She’d gone out to run some errands and took extra long. But in Southern California, traffic happened every day. The key was to always plan for it. Just because it could take only twenty minutes to drive a distance on a good
day didn’t mean every day would be the same. No way in hell. Some days the same drive could take
