    Chapter One

    THE BOTTLE

    One day, Johnny stuck his nose in his grandpa’s closet and found a bottle. It was made of dark green glass. A sandy cork was plugged in the top. The sand was as hard as cement.

    Johnny took the bottle to the sunroom where his grandpa was snoozing. He jumped on the sofa. What’s in this bottle? he demanded.

    Well now, that’s a puzzle, his grandpa said. I never did figure that out.

    Johnny held the bottle up to the sun. A shadow lurked inside the green glass. There was something inside for sure.

    It’s a pretty good bottle, said Johnny. Where’d you find it?

    Well, said Grandpa, "I found it a long time ago. I was on holiday in the Cook Islands with my mother. In case you forgot, that’s your great-grandma. My big sister came too. In those days the three of us went everywhere together.

    "I found that bottle on our last day at the seashore. The beach was wide, with rocks at both ends. There were lots of palm trees. Those trees were so high they scrubbed the sky.

    "Every day toward dinnertime, the tide went out. The ocean drained off the sand. It left pools of salt water in every nook and cranny. Those pools were like warm bathtubs. We each picked one for a good soak.

    "My sister was always after a bit of sparkle. She sat in a frothy basin full of pearl cups and shiny stones.

    "My mother’s pool looked like a bowl of salad. It was stuffed with kelp and grapestone and sea cucumber. Cucumbers are supposed to be good for the skin.

    I guess my mother knew what she was doing. I never saw anyone so beautiful as my mother.
