    The five-year-old boy was sitting at the breakfast table in the family kitchen one cold day, while his father, having a bowl of cereal and reading the newspaper, was sitting directly to his left. Rudy was sitting in his pillow-elevated chair with Scoundrel, his cat, curled up in his lap. It was a no-no to have the cat at the table, but his parents always turned their heads to it, unless his beloved pet raised his head and attempted to steal a morsel of food.

    This typical morning before Rudy was shuttled off to kindergarten was like all the other mornings. The two of them had this ritual and followed it every day during the week. From his cereal bowl concentration, Rudy glanced up at the backside of the newspaper his father held high above the table, directly blocking the view between father and son.

    As he stared at the page of newsprint, a picture of his beloved grandmother formed in the center of the back left page. Rudy’s eyes grew wide at the phenomenon, his spoon full of marshmallow cereal suspended in midair. Her picture was smiling softly at him. And, he smiled back at the woman who spoiled him unashamedly and defended him to no end.

    Suddenly, a chill passed through him and her smile disappeared. Along with it went his enthusiasm at having seen her. Rudy’s little eyebrows scrunched up between his eyes in puzzlement, but no one was watching Rudy, so no one knew, except for him.

    Within minutes, the phone rang loudly into the quiet time of the morning. Rudy heard his mother answer in the hallway, calmly at first, then in a panicked voice she called for Rudy’s father to come quickly. The little boy listened to a muffled conversation between his father and the caller, ending with
