Conversations with Ram Dass - Ram Dass

    2014

    Introduction

Imet Ram Dass on Labor Day Weekend in 1970. It was the day that Swami Muktananda first arrived in America. His host Rudi, a teacher in New York City, invited Ram Dass, Swami Venkatesananda of the Divine Life Society, the Brooklyn psychic Hilda Charlton, and many others to meet Baba at his retreat in upstate New York. I was studying with Rudi at that time so I found myself in the mix.

By the end of the retreat, Baba Muktananda asked Ram Dass and myself to organize his tour of America. Going into that weekend, I didn’t know what to expect or what would come of it, but this is what unfolded:

I found myself immersed with Ram Dass for several months following, which cemented a friendship between us that has endured 44 years.

Like all relationships, ours has had its ups and downs—and sideways. But with Ram Dass, the love and compassion is always there. He has helped me on numerous occasions to understand life in a more open and loving way, to be able to do business with a more spiritual understanding, and to develop more harmonious relationships of all kinds.

His guidance and love has helped me—and millions of others—through the continual cycles of birth and death.

In 2002, some years after he was stroked (as he likes to say), I moved him to Maui to help create a new, healthy life. Fortunately, it worked out for the best and he is doing very well in mind, body, and spirit. He is teaching, writing, and loving everyone in each and Every moment. He is a true example of Guru Bhakta (devotion to his Guru), through which he is devoted to all of humanity with his love and heartfelt seva (selfless service).

In 2009, we founded Bhakti Fest, which is known all over the world as the only festival bringing Bhakti Yoga and Kirtan to the general public. As Ram Dass no longer travels, and cannot attend in-person, he participates through the use of technology. Each year, I spend time with him on Maui discussing contemporary spiritual subjects. We videotape these sessions and no subject is off-limits, he holds nothing back, we talk about everything. These videos are then screened at our many events around the country throughout the year. Each time we show them, we see more and more yogis walk away with a profound shift, understanding, and epiphany.

To make it easier for everyone to continue to be enriched from Ram Dass’ teachings, we created this book from the Bhakti Fest interviews.

May Ram Dass’ words of wisdom and compassion continue to shine peace, love, and happiness on us all.
