Steps to Prayer - Rodney Fereday

    INTRODUCTION

I wanted to write a book about prayer and started the process many times. Each time I couldn’t get to grips with it. Then after completing my first book ‘Keys to the Kingdom’ - a series of sermon outlines based on Matthew’s Gospel; and with much encouragement from my son - I decided to have another try.

This time, I wrote in a conversational style as if talking to an unseen person, anticipating and attempting to answer the inevitable questions about the subject.

It is written for the person new to prayer. A kind of self help manual to get them started. And for those who have some knowledge on the subject, I hope it will help to broaden their understanding.

If you practice my tips, your prayer life will blossom into a more profound relationship with God. I encourage you to give it a go. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

WHAT IS THE ESSENCE OF PRAYER?

When I was at theological college in the eighties, I spent the summer holidays working as an auxiliary nurse in a Nottingham hospital. One week I was shadowing the hospital chaplain (we’ll call him Tom).

The first day began at 8.30 A.M. Almost immediately his beeper went-off. We were called to accident and emergency. On arrival the staff were preparing to receive casualties from a road traffic accident. The first to come through the doors was a teenage boy of about thirteen. He was dead on arrival. Within seconds his mother entered, accompanied by the police. As she rushed through the doors, she sensed her son had passed away. Seeing Tom standing there in his dog collar, she charged towards him arms flailing. I stood behind him wondering what would happen next as she beat his chest with clenched fists - sobbing. Tom simply stood there, his arms outstretched, allowing her to beat him. Then slowly, and lovingly, he wrapped his arms around her as her aggression subsided, praying with her as she calmed, accepting his ministry.

Tom’s beeper went off a second time. Now we were on our way to the maternity unit. A young couple of about twenty-four had lost their premature baby. We were ushered into a special bereavement room. The young couple were in a state of numbness. We met them as a specially trained nurse entered carrying a lifeless child - its body was so tiny it had to be dressed in doll’s clothing. The nurse handed the infant to the parents allowing them bond. Thankfully this is is normal practice in many hospitals today, unlike the past where the dead child was simply whisked away.

After twenty minutes the parents gave their child back to the waiting nurse. Tom
