      In this section you will be presented with one Spanish sentence at a time. Try to understand the sentence, then click to the next page, where you will find an English translation. There are 25 sentences.

      Era una emergencia; ¡tuvimos que encontrar un fontanero de inmediato!

      It was an emergency; we had to find a plumber immediately!

      Es difícil resumir mis sentimientos. Son muy complicados.

      It’s difficult to sum up my feelings. They are very complicated.

      ¡No te pases en el casino!

      Don’t get carried away in the casino!

      ¿Me echas un vistazo a estos poemas?

      Would you look through these poems for me?

      (Echar un vistazo = ‘cast a glance’, a useful phrase in colloquial Spanish)

      Él quiere montar un negocio de venta de libros raros.

      He wants to set up a business selling rare books.

      Se ha convertido en un trabajo más complejo de lo que pensaba.

      It’s turned into a more complex job than I thought.

      Me puse a hablar con una persona desconocida, ¡y resultó que era un amigo tuyo!

      I began talking to a stranger, and it tuned out to be a friend of yours!

      Debiste haber recogido los juguetes; ahora llueve y están mojados.

      You should have taken the toys in; it’s raining now and they’re wet.

      Durante la guerra tuve que vigilar el cielo de aviones enemigos.

      During the war I had to watch the sky for enemy aircraft.
