      INTRODUCTION

      How many of you remember back to December 1999? There was a different kind of bug in the air then, not like the Ebola virus and Enterovirus D68 virus presently dominating the news, at least here in North America. The bug that was being feared then was the Y2K bug, also known as the Year 2000 bug, or Millennium bug. It was thought then that it would cripple industries and the infrastructure, such as power plants, of all countries around the world. In short, that it would cause damage to anything running by means of a computer system. As the clock ticked toward midnight on December 31, 1999, there were a lot of people worldwide who were uncertain, confused, puzzled, and bewildered, as to what was going to happen as January 1, 2000 registered on computers worldwide. In other words, people were very much perplexed.

      And today, there are a lot of people who are very much perplexed at the present state of the world, fuelled by the threat of terrorist groups, who are not only intent on disrupting our way of life in the West, but of completely destroying it and replacing it with their own ideology. There are also a lot of people perplexed by the unpredictable weather we have been having worldwide the last few years, plus the ever increasing number of tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes, and hurricanes. And as many are aware, it is not that long ago that the Avian flu viruses H5N1 and H7N9 were dominating the news, before being replaced by the current Ebola and Enterovirus D68 viruses, with the latter affecting and killing mostly the young. Then too, it is not only events which are bringing perplexity to a lot of people, but it is also what we see people doing and saying all around us, which is causing us to shake our heads in bewilderment and exclaim to ourselves, What next?

      Now, we need to be aware that in the midst of the present state of the world, as described in brief above, it is normal to be perplexed at times by what we see and hear. People have been perplexed since the dawn of mankind at the creation of the world. What one wants to avoid in the midst of one’s perplexity, however, is despair! Despair is a feeling of hopelessness. It is being in a state of daily existence where one loses all confidence of wanting to go on, or of being so consumed by fear, that one is paralyzed from carrying on in one’s daily routine of living. Despair is what drives some people to commit suicide. And this is something which God wants to see avoided, especially by those who are His children on earth, due to a new spiritual birth into God’s family. In other words, God does not want those who have a personal relationship with Him at the present time to remain perplexed if they are, and to especially avoid going into despair!

      And this is no doubt why God has led His servant to write this book under His guiding Hand, which is for the purpose of leading His people in these perplexing times to keep on keeping on in the carrying out of God’s will, as we wait together for the soon coming of God’s precious Son, Jesus Christ, from Heaven to earth. In other words, together, we all need to learn how to overcome the perplexities of this present life. And since God is very much still in control of what is going on in the world, then we want to examine what others have faced before us and what solutions God provided. We will therefore look at people and events taking place in the world at present and also at people and events in the Bible, which God has given us as a guide book to give us direction in this life, while on our way to God’s eternal Presence, noting here what God says about His word at Romans 15:4 in this regard, For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Hope based on a trust in God is what God wants us to have in facing tomorrow, not despair.

      In my third book, which is titled, How We know For Sure That We Are Living In The Last Days, we looked at the foundations which are being destroyed at present in societies worldwide, and what effect this is having on us at present and will have on the upcoming generation. It is in the midst of the foundations being destroyed that God wants us as His people to be firm in the midst of uncertainty and confusion in a society that is moving more and more away from God every day. He wants us to move forward strong in our faith in God, so that we can be a stabilizing influence in an ever-widening circle, first in our own families, then among our relatives and friends, and even at work and in society. We will therefore examine important issues which can cause us to not only be perplexed, but even lead us to be a destabilizing influence to those around us if not dealt with in our lives. In short, we will examine areas of our lives which need to be well adjusted in order to provide stability for our own lives and our families in the midst of uncertainty and confusion. And so this is what this first book of a new series is all about. It is designed to help believers face the last days of the present age with confidence and hope, based on reality, and not just on what we see and hear all about us. This new series is entitled, The Practical Helps Library, simply because it is about applying God’s word where it counts, to our everyday lives!

      And before we turn to look at the truths God led His servant to write about, there is one last task which is necessary before bringing this Introduction to a close, which is to let the reader know a little about the author. We are all curious by nature, so a few brief details are here in order. I have had a personal relationship with God since January 14, 1980 at 8:45 pm in the evening, which is almost 35 years ago now, which is by far the best event that has ever happened in my life! One of my favorite verses is John 5:24, where God’s precious Son, Jesus Christ, tells us that anyone who believes in Him has eternal life, and as a result will never experience God’s judgment, but such a one has passed out of death into life.

      After completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering in the corporate offices of a large utility, God called His servant as an evangelist in early 1999, then sent him out over 2000 miles away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, and where His servant has been and is still serving Him.

      The author was widowed in 1994, his one and only wife having died of cancer at a young age. When the author married his wife, she herself was a widow of two years, with three children. At the time of our marriage the children were 9, 12, and 15 years old respectively. The author did adopt the children, who have since gone on to each marry a Christian spouse, and then for each of these couples to have two children each.

      WHEN PERPLEXED, OUR GREAT NEED IS TO COME TO GOD, WHO IS IN CONTROL OF ALL PEOPLE, EVENTS, AND CIRCUMSTANCES!

      The best place to begin a book relating to a child of God learning to overcome the perplexities of the present life is with God Himself! For only God has the full picture and the most up-to-date information of what is going on earth! And therefore only God can lead His children to know what to do when faced with any perplexing people, event, or circumstance we might come across. It is God to Whom we need to constantly come to for all the perplexities we face as His children on earth.

      As an example, let us take the Y2K bug mentioned in the Introduction. The author was working in the corporate offices of a large utility at the time, in the process of transitioning from almost twenty-eight years of working Project Engineering to being an evangelist in the field of service to which God had just commissioned His servant. I was also helping to provide some leadership to a small group of believers gathering weekly for what we read at Acts 2:42. So the Y2K bug hysteria was something that I was personally conscious of, not only at work, but also with the believers I was gathering with weekly, plus a number of other believers with whom I had contact with at work and elsewhere.

      And to digress for a moment, it would prove useful here to speak about the Y2K bug, for the benefit of those who may be reading this and are not familiar with what was involved here. In the early days of computers, many computer programs were designed to shorten the four digits in a year to two digits in order to save on memory space. As we neared the year 2000, many started to realize that computers might not interpret the ‘00’ in the year 2000 as such, but could pick any other year, such as 1800, or 1900, which could cause havoc with the whole system being run by the computer program. Therefore, many feared that as the clock ticked to the approach of January 1, 2000, many computers would be interpreting that as any possible date having two zeroes in it. And to compound the problem further, many did not realize at first that 2000 was a leap year. Then this was also the start of a new millennium, which always has a certain amount of doomsday hysteria attached to it. As a result, there was high level of alarm which arose all over the world as
