Chapter 1
Credit
James Duncan rapidly walked back and forth through the rooms of his second floor apartment on Balboa Island. He couldn't wait to get his award. He was so excited his stomach ached and his heart pounded. Why was time moving so slowly? Finally he had to leave and try to calm down.
He went downstairs and got into his 1967 silver Corvette convertible, parked out front. A twist of the ignition key produced a deafening roar and a strong exhaust smell. He hoped that the roar came from his car and not his stomach. James drove away from his apartment, over the bridge connecting the island to the mainland, and crossed Pacific Coast Highway on Jamboree Road. It was a short drive to RTN Pharmaceuticals where he worked.
James turned onto the main driveway and showed his badge to the guard who waved him in. He parked in front of Building Number Two, the second of four long, white two-story buildings. This complex was where RTN performed their drug research. It was located on a strip of land they’d purchased from the Fashion Island Country Club a few years ago when times were tough and the club needed money. The sale was a big surprise to almost everyone, including the club members.
James entered the building and walked upstairs into a large room with windows on two sides, one side facing the parking lot and the other the adjacent building. Dark blue walls of manager cubicles below the windows blocked most of the sunshine, and overhead lights were required to make up for the lack of natural brightness. Ten imitation mahogany desks were arranged in a circle, facing toward the center so the occupants could easily talk to one another. Before going to his desk, James walked over to his friend Lisa, who was sitting at her desk. He got down on one knee to be at eye level with her.
How was your date last night?
James asked.
Not good. I don't think he liked me.
I thought you two were a good match.
He brought me home before nine, and then left quicker than a MacBook booting up.
Sorry, I know you really liked him.
Lisa was a nice lady and extremely intelligent, but a little plain. She wore drab, almost floor-length dresses that might have been colorful at one time, but not anymore. She was a computer whiz, although she had trouble holding a conversion outside of her technical area.
So what about you? You’re about to get an award.
I couldn't sleep last night.
Lisa put her hand on James’ shoulder.
Relax, it’s a done deal,
she said.
James stood up, walked over to his desk, and opened his laptop. His first e-mail read:
Memo to all members of Alzheimer’s Group:
The safety and efficacy tests on the AZR drug have been successfully completed.
Congratulations to everyone involved.
Please attend the honors assembly today at 10 a.m.
Marvin Pickler, President
James glanced over his laptop screen and saw all his coworkers staring at him.
Well, are you ready to receive your award?
Carl asked.
I expect Pickler will honor our whole group,
James replied.
You’re the one who deserves to get the most credit. You discovered it,
Mike said.
Carl and Mike, along with Lisa and Fred, were James’ best friends at work. They looked out for each other in the Alzheimer’s Group and were genuinely pleased with James’ discovery.
James tried to be humble, but on the inside, he was ecstatic. This was going to be his first award. He definitely deserved it. Everyone in his group had been working on an Alzheimer’s cure for years. They knew that the brains of people with Alzheimer’s had two types of abnormalities, plaques and tangles. Plaques are clumps of beta-amyloid protein that collect outside neurons, and tangles are tau proteins that form inside brain cells. They slowly disrupt a person’s memory, and later language, reasoning, and social ability. The trick was to find a drug that got rid of the plaques and tangles while not negatively affecting other parts of the brain.
One evening, while James was working late, he’d discovered a formula for a drug he called AZR that could at least retard the growth of plaques and tangles. RTN had just completed testing of AZR on mice and performed the necessary safety and efficacy evaluations. The next steps were to apply for a patent, get FDA approval, and start trials with humans.
James continued reading e-mails until just before ten. He left his desk and walked to the auditorium in the next building, expecting to see just his group. Instead, research scientists from the whole company were there.
He sat between Lisa and Mike and glanced around the almost full auditorium. Were all these people waiting to see him accept his award? He reached into his pants pocket, pulled out his handkerchief, and wiped the sweat off his face. He had never been this nervous.
The song Hail to the Chief
suddenly blared from speakers hanging on the ceiling and filled the auditorium. President Pickler marched on stage, followed by someone who looked a
