    Chapter 10

With High-Lord Freyden back at the helm, everyone buckled down to business. The RATs were stationed throughout Gaeas-7, and with their help, the Gaeans began fast and furious work repairing and reinforcing the old equipment and devising new defense measures.

Smash waited three agonizingly long days—just long enough to assure himself that the RATs and Gaeans were playing nicely together—then he went looking for Freyden. He found him in the Round Table chamber, discussing the designs for some new long-range weapons with SAM and Dael. Braun and Bres stood nearby.

Smash braced for battle. I’m glad I found you all together. I have something to tell you. The tricky part was how. He had many fine qualities—but tact wasn’t often one of them. He just blurted it out. I’m taking off in the morning to find Princess Starshine and bring her home.

    Too abrupt?

Freyden’s eyes lit with hope for an instant, then dimmed again. Sadly, he shook his head.

Captain, I appreciate your thought more than you can know, but it’s impossible. Don’t you think that if there were the slightest chance she could be saved, I’d have gone after her myself? We need you here, lad. Don’t throw away your life on a futile quest.

A worthy try, High-Lord. However, you are wasting your breath, SAM said on a weary crackle. "Captain Hardn excels at futile."

    SAM was always so helpful.

Um, Smash, I think I know how you feel—Dael glanced at Bres—but you’re too valuable a man to risk. If Kkrypt ever got his hands on you… He left the sentence hanging. Stay here on Gaea. I’ll go after the princess.

And who will rescue her from you? Bres asked tartly.

She doesn’t mean that. She’s just upset at the thought of me leaving, Dael said with cavalier confidence.

In your dreams, she told him.

If it’s any consolation, Braun whispered in Dael’s ear, her mother fought me tooth and nail before I finally won her over. I’ve still got the scars to prove it.

Thanks. Dael looked less than comforted.

    Braun smirked. Anytime, boy.

Hey, whose side are you on? Bres fussed at her father.

Smash thought they were all getting a little off target. Frankly, he’d expected more protest than this, and now wasn’t sure whether to feel relieved or offended. He faced Dael.

Thank you. I really mean that. But this job is mine. You should know me well enough by now to realize I’d never let another man do something that’s my responsibility.

Then I’ll go with you. Dael joked a lot, but it was plain to see he was serious now, and genuinely concerned for his friend’s safety.

He was also second-in-command of the RAT fleet, as Smash pointed out.

    Dael, we can’t both leave.

Well, I’m no captain, bellowed Braun’s deep bass, bringing Smash’s eyes back to him. "If you’re determined to do this, I’m going with you, and that’s that."

End of argument. Once Braun made up his mind, nothing short of a super nova could change it (and a big super nova at that).

SAM wanted to come also, but Smash couldn’t allow it. The robo had stored in his memory banks the details of every raid the RATs had ever made against the Imperial Federation, and was therefore invaluable for plotting future defense and attack
