About this ebook

Jack Exum began his audio lesson on the Spirit with a little song he put together "Fill me with your Spirit Lord, fill me up today..." He would then tell his audience, "I could not sing this ten years ago." What changed him? (He would correct me on this by saying, "Not WHAT Jack, but WHO!"). The realization that every single believer, has been born again of water AND Spirit (one birth with two elements). To emphasize this he says "A Spiritless water birth is no better than a waterless Spirit birth.” This same Spirit, which 'indwells' (and fills) us throughout our life, will resurrect us when Jesus comes again, changed him. As he says, “The Spirit reveals Christ to us, and forms Christ in us.” "You cannot put the Spirit in a 'box'."If the Spirit does not 'fit' your 'theology', maybe it's time for a change.

The original manuscript for this book, was trashed! He said it was too defensive. This writing, without apologies, teaches what the Bible says and what he believed. Without a doubt, this will make you think and will change your life for the better.

Jack Exum

Redeemed and added to the body of Christ, May 31, 1959 at Southside Church of Christ, Beaumont, Texas. Graduated from Preston Road School of Preaching, Dallas, Texas, 1971. I ministered to congregations in Georgia, Saskatchewan, Canada, Indiana, Ukraine, and Florida. After the passing of my brother Robert Exum January 25,2016, my wife and I moved to begin work with the West Keene Church of CHrist in Keene, New Hampshire. I am a committed Christian, happily married to my wife Lauw Liang (Wiwik), from Indonesia. Together, we seek only to grow, and serve together in His grace, so freely given in Jesus. (Mailing address: 69 Blossom Street, Keene, NH., 03431.) Purpose and Philosophy statements: * To reach out to and encourage the body of Christ. Not only by publishing books by dad (Jack Exum), and eventually my own, but also dad's and my own studies on www.jackexum.com. I strive for BALANCE, avoiding EXTREMES, LEGALISM and LABELS which have contributed to division and sectarianism in the church. Growing in faith, hope, and love, unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace, and being true to the Gospel of Christ, is 'where we stand.' My prayer is that we grow in grace, and learn to accept each other, being patient with those who question, or differ, while being 'Heaven bound' together. * To reach the lost. This is the mission of Jesus. Everyone deserves the privilege to hear about Jesus at least once. There is ONE God, and he loves you INCREDIBLY, There is ONE Savior, who gave His all that we might belong to Him forever, and ONE faith given to be shared in the power of His Spirit. There is ONE body to which all believers are added (Acts 2:38-47). That body has no official name in the New Testament but has several designations which describe relationship, with God, Christ, and each other. * To hold to restoration principles: 1. “No Creed but Christ.” (Written creeds, and traditions are not authoritative). 2. “Where the Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent.” 3. “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, love.” 4. “We are not the only Christians, but we are Christians only.” Allow the Lord to deal with the 'weeds.' * We understand what the Bible teaches about being saved. One "must be born of water and the Spirit" (John 3:3-5). For more on this read Acts 2. However, now everyone who obeys the gospel of grace will be found in a congregation with the 'acceptable name.' God knows all that are His. Whoever does what early Christians did to be saved, is my brother and sister in Christ. I let God do the judging, I have 'my plate full,' working on my own sinfulness, and growing in grace, while encouraging others to do the same. Grow in grace! Heaven bound!

    Author’s Note

    Preface

(Have you ever heard or read something and then think, I wish I had said that? Well, this is one of those times for me. What a marvelous study! While I will try hard not to change what Dad wrote, there will be times when corrections or explanations are needed. Usually, these will be found within parenthesis (…). Dad’s prayer and mine remain the same… to grow in grace and help you do the same.)

This book is designed to be a window-cracker or a door-opener. There’s not a ‘defensive bone’ in its ‘body.’ It has no ‘ax to grind,’ no hobby to ride. It is simple Bible truth about a most complex subject.

It is designed to introduce (or re-introduce) the reader to the on-going work of the Spirit in the life of the believer. What a shame that so many of us know so little about the Holy Spirit!

How many books have been written, and how many more could be written about the Holy Spirit of God? Yet, He, through the hands of men, only wrote one. In that Book (the Bible), we find our hope and joy revealed.

May these few pages cause all who read, to search His book again, to venture deeper into the Spirit’s revelation and truth. As disciples (learners), we should be willing and eager to brush aside human traditions and search His secret wisdom. May we continue to open our minds to the Mind of the Spirit, unafraid of the paths where He will lead. We know He will never contradict His own revealed Word.

These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments (I Corinthians 2:10, 14, 15).

Chapter 1: Don’t Try To Explain It!

One may rightly say, It is right to believe that the Holy Spirit dwells in EVERY Christian as long as you don’t try to explain it! It is the ever present temptation for a preacher, lecturer, or author to try to unravel the deep mysteries of life.

Take, for instance, a grain of wheat or a kernel of corn. Who will step forward with wisdom and understanding and explain the life within. Plant the kernel and
