      It was the first week in June before our senior year of high school. That night, we’d hung out with our friends from school down on the town square of Iron Mountain, Georgia—about an hour north of Atlanta.

      Joel looked over at his best friend, Trent Hamilton, in the light from the dashboard and smiled. We’ll see. I ain’t making any promises.

      From Warner Robbins, Georgia, Macy was the cousin of Trent’s girlfriend, Kim, and she was there for the summer, so Joel’s best friend was working overtime to get the two of them together.

      Why not? he asked lightly.

      For their entire lives, Trent and Joel had lived next door to each other, and they were closer than brothers. The two boys were the same age—born three weeks apart with Trent being the elder, and they’d been friends since they could walk. Trent had always been a natural athlete while Joel had been the smart one. Despite the fact that Joel was an intellectual, he’d followed his bud into football and baseball and had excelled at both. In addition to playing sports together, they slept at one or the other’s house almost every weekend, and they attended the same school, having most of the same classes. The boys shared the same circle of friends.

      At six foot, one, Trent had an athletic build, a broad chest and a narrow waist. With wavy blond hair, he had a handsome face with blue eyes. With brown hair and hazel eyes, Joel was an inch shorter than his friend. Joel Cassidy was a stunner—voted Best Looking every year in his class since ninth grade, but he’d never let it go to his head. In Joel’s opinion, he’d always thought that Trent was the better looking one, but who was he to say?
