I was born in Rector, Arkansas, a small farming based town in Northeast Arkansas. Later, my parents moved to St. Louis in search of better economic opportunity. At age 16, disallusioned and bored with the “One Size Fits All” educational system, I dropped out in the 10th grade.Just as soon as I turned 17, I joined the Marine Corps. The education the Corps provided, wasn't always polite and pleasant, but it most certainly was not boring. My four year enlistment included one year in South Vietnam. 7 November, 1965 to 6 November, 1966. At the end of my enlistment, having attained the rank of Sgt E-5, I returned to civilian life. After nine months as an Industrial Engineering Clerk, I took advantage of an opportunity to move into transportation. For the next 34 years, I was a dispatcher and driver supervisor in the Trucking Industry. In 2011, the rise in popularity of E-books caught my attention. A life long avid reader, I'd always believed I could write a book, but didn't know how to go about getting it published. The birth of E-Books changed all that. In the fall of 2011, fulfilling a life long dream, I published my first book, The Sparrows Whisper.Today, my wife, Mary Katherine, and I, live in a small rural town in Southwestern Illinois. With the encouragement of family and friends, I've published a total of 13 novels. The split between my books has been divided pretty evenly between Mysteries and Westerns. Work on number 14, is under way.For all those that have taken the time to read my books, I appreciate your interest very much.

The school bus pulled to a stop in front of Paige Ireland's house. As Paige climbed aboard the bus, 13 year old Lane Gatlin's mouth suddenly went dry. Lane was the first one on the bus route, so he chose his own seat. His attempts to talk with Paige at school, or in town, had all failed. He decided if only he could encourage her to sit beside him on the bus, she would stop thinking of him as just a runt. Afraid Paige might rush by before she had a chance to notice him, Lane sat in the fifth row. That way, she would be sure to see him as soon as she boarded.
As she neared his row, Lane spoke quickly.
Good morning Paige. This seat's not taken.
As soon as the words left his mouth, Lane wanted to crawl under the seat. Of course that seat wasn't taken. Other than Paige, himself, and the driver, the bus was empty. After lying awake most of the night planning what he would say, he had ruined it by saying something really stupid.
At first Paige seemed to not notice his comment. She smiled and hesitated, as if she might really sit beside him. Then she laughed, turned, and sat on the opposite side of the bus. It was not the first time Paige had deliberately toyed with him. Each time, feeling like a fool, he swore it would never happen again. Each time, his resolve crumbled the next time he saw her. Try as he might, Lane could not stay mad at Paige Ireland. She was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. She could have her pick of any guy in school. How could he blame her for avoiding him?
Afraid Paige might laugh at him again, he stared out the bus window for as long as his curiosity allowed. Sneaking a glance to his right, he saw Jan Crenshaw sitting next to Paige. The seats directly in front of, and behind them, were also filled with girls from school. As always, Paige was the center of conversation. When he saw her whispering to the other girls, he couldn't help but look closer, wondering if she might be talking about him.
Suddenly, she pointed in his direction, and burst into laughter. The other girls, seeking Paige's favor, laughed along with her. Wishing he could think of an excuse to get off the bus, Lane turned his face to the window, and left it there, until they arrived at school. When the bus came to a stop, Lane left his seat immediately, hoping to escape further teasing from Paige and her group. His plan failed, when the bus driver decided to finish filling out his trip record before opening the door. The group he had hoped to avoid, then lined up behind him. When the bus door finally opened, Lane got off as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, before he could get away from the rest of the kids, he overheard a comment from one of the girls.
I don't blame Paige for ignoring him. I mean, can you imagine what it would be like for someone like her to be seen with a little twerp like him? She would like, die from embarrassment!
Acting like he hadn't heard the comment, Lane stared straight ahead as he walked into the school at his normal pace.
During the lunch hour, as was his habit, Lane sat at a table with several boys his age. He sat at their table, but he really wasn't one of them. They talked, joked, and laughed as a group. He listened. The few times one of the guys spoke to, or about him, it was to refer to him as a runt or midget. He didn't mind hearing it all that much from the guys. It was much harder when he heard the girls say it.
When Lane finished eating, he decided to go outside and be by himself for the rest of the lunch hour. Leaning against the big oak tree, he was thinking about how glad he was this was Friday. He had two days of hard work ahead of him on the ranch, but most of that time he would be alone. More and more, he
