About this ebook

The book of Philippians is one of the most positive works of the Apostle Paul. He loved this church and his epistle to them bears that out. Within these pages we will learn: of answers to prayer, of focus upon the Lord, of the deity of Christ and of faith promise giving. We will learn of promises for God's care and supply and of the character of the person whose life is given to Jesus Christ.

This book, just under one hundred pages, will take you page by page and chapter by chapter through the Apostle Paul's epistle to the Philippians.

THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING this book. I trust it will prove to be helpful and a blessing to you. These pages were originally written as sermon notes. I have developed my own style for sermon preparation that seems to work well for me as I preach from the pulpit. I elected to keep most of that style intact. I trust it will add rather than distract from the effectiveness while you read.

Should you find the book is helpful to you, or if you have questions you would like to ask me, that you feel free to contact me. My e-mail address is pastormck@bbcpuyallup.org.

I would also appreciate it if you write a simple review of the book.

    PAUL'S OPENING STATEMENTS

    Phil 1:1-10

I always love the introductory lesson whenever I do a book study.  The Word of God has a way of saying SO MUCH in just the first few words of a particular book.

    A couple of examples:

In the beginning GOD created the heavens and the earth

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

These verses are POWER PACKED! I believe we'll find the same thing is true with the first two verses of Philippians, which will be where we focus our attention today.

Philippi was a chief city of the western part of Macedonia, (Acts 16:12.) It took its name from Philip, the famous king of Macedon, who repaired and beautified it, and it was afterwards made a Roman colony. Near this place were the Campi Philippici,

remarkable for the famous battles between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great, and that between Augustus and Antony on one side and Cassius and Brutus on the other. But it is most remarkable among Christians for this epistle, which was written when Paul was a prisoner at Rome, A.D. 62. Paul seems to have had a very particular kindness for the church at Philippi, which he himself had been instrumental in planting; ....

.... It seems, by many passages in this epistle, that this church at Philippi grew into a flourishing church, and particularly that the brethren were very kind to Paul. He had reaped of their temporal things, and he made a return in spiritual things. He acknowledges the receipt of a present they had sent him (4:18), and this when no other church communicated with him as concerning giving and receiving (v. 15); and he gives them a prophet's, an apostle's reward, in this epistle, which is of more value than thousands of gold and silver. (Matthew Henry's Commentary)

It appears, as you read through the book of Philippians that Paul held a special place in his heart for these people, and they for him.

There are no negative comments made about them.

And this is one of the few works of Apostle Paul in which he does not have a need to defend his calling.

The key subject of Philippians is THE MIND ( 1:27; 2:5; 3:10; 4:8)

    WHO WROTE PHILIPPIANS

    There are two names given.

    Paul

    Timotheus (or Timothy)

Apostle Paul is the inspired writer of the book, but Paul includes Timothy's name. Read the inscription at the bottom and you will find another name is added, Epaphroditus, who probably took the dictation of the letter for Paul.

    A. Paul didn't take all the credit for himself

No one, no matter how strong, or smart, or educated, or wealthy, can succeed in this life alone!

We all need others for encouragement, fellowship, support, counsel and so forth!

    1.  Paul was WISE enough to see his need for others in his ministry

He could not have accomplished anywhere near all he did had it not been for the fact that he enlisted others to help him in his goals.

    2. And Paul was HUMBLE enough to include those God had allowed to work alongside him in the credit!

    Some time,
