Chapter Two: Plot Overview
The story begins with Eddie, the central character. He happens to be an elderly gentleman; he works at an amusement park named Ruby Pier
as the head of the maintenance.
The regular visitors to the park generally know Eddie. People sometimes humorously call him Eddie Maintenance.
There are several patches on his uniform that he wears while doing the maintenance work.
It transpires that Eddie had served in the Second World War as a soldier. He received a leg injury during the war that has left his leg crippled. He is not happy working at the park but he does so because he has inherited that job from his dad.
There are some rumors around that Eddie had an altercation with a fellow soldier in the war. After that nobody knew what happened to the soldier and nobody ever asked about it.
At this point there is a hint that foreshadows the Captain’s death and the time and place. It is obvious now that the Captain was the cause of Eddie’s leg injury during the war when they were stationed in the Philippines.
One morning, on Eddie’s birthday, one of the rides in the park does not work properly because a cable is damaged, and consequently the machine stops halfway through the ride.
The passengers are rescued by two staff members at the park. The staff members release the ride’s cart for inspection. Eddie begins to shout to tell them not to do that because he knows that if the cart is dropped it will detach.
Suddenly, he notices a little girl, Amy/Annie, standing at the spot where the car is going to fall. Eddie uses his all strength and throws him towards the girl. He wants to pull that girl away to safety.
Eddie rescues the girl but the car falls on him with
