    Chapter One

‘Drop the gun!’ The man repeated.

Slowly Victor placed the gun on the table beside him.

‘Now let him go.’ The man nodded at Victor’s men to let the prisoner go.

Victor gazed into London’s eyes. The terror in her eyes almost broke his heart. He wanted nothing more than to shoot that man, but she was more important than him.

The men untied the prisoner. There was a gunshot! The knife fell from London’s neck, and the man fell to the ground.

‘Oh god!’ She ran straight into Victor’s arms.

Victor picked up the gun, aimed and shot the man about to be released, straight in the head!

‘Oh god!’ She hid into him, and he held her tight.

London cried into Victor. So much had happened in such a short space of time. The world she once knew, no longer existed. She was on the other side now, and there was no turning back.

‘Well done, Aaron.’ Victor nodded at his driver.

Aaron had seen it all happen. He’d seen the man drag London away from the warehouse and to the office. Aaron was quick to act. The extra gun was beneath the driver’s seat. It was something Victor had requested from him the moment he worked for him. And now it had come in handy.

‘It’s okay darling.’ He kissed the crown of her head.

He wasn’t sure what shift had taken place within her after everything she’d seen, but he was certain he didn’t want to lose her. She was the one thing that was light to him. He needed her. He pulled her back and searched her eyes.

    ‘Are you okay?’

She nodded. He would not ask why she’d left the car; all he cared about was that she was okay. The men cleared up the bodies. It was something they were used to. Victor guided London outside and gave her a moment to catch her breath.

‘There are children,’ she said finally. ‘In the warehouse. There are children, but Paige wasn’t in there.’ She scrunched the red top in her hand.

‘Okay. I’ll get Bradley to sort this out. He’ll call the authorities. We must go.’

‘No! Not until I see that the children are safe.’ She had promised the little girl she would go back for her.

He was about to protest when he noticed the look in her eyes. That was it. The thing that drew him to her that made him want to do the right thing.

‘You have connections. This is your world. Make it happen with me here with the children,’ she said.

His heart missed a beat. The words caressed him, she wanted him to be that man for her, and he wanted nothing more than to please her. London gazed up at him and smiled lightly.

    ‘What?’ He smiled back nervously.

‘Don’t look so worried.’ She sniffed.

‘How can I not be? You just saw a part I didn’t want you to see.’

She took in a deep breath and nodded. That was true, but she also understood it had been a necessary evil.

‘I don’t have to accept what you do, but I understand it. These people are bad people. They steal and keep children to sell them on. That is evil, and yes they deserve to die. My daughter is out there somewhere, and they’re getting away with it!’

‘Oh no they won’t, trust me. I know where to go, and I’ll have Bradley sort out the details.’

    ‘Mmmm.’

    ‘What?’

‘Nothing,’ she said shyly. ‘Let’s get those children.’

He nodded. He took a moment to speak with Bradley so he could make all the arrangements. After he’d spoken to Bradley, he took her hand, and they headed for the warehouse. London led him to Janice’s room.

‘You came back!’ The little girl ran into her arms.

    ‘I did, I promised. Didn’t I?’

She nodded and looked up at Victor.

‘This is my friend.’ She told the girl. ‘He’s the one who found this place. You’re a very lucky girl.’ She crouched down to the little girl’s level. ‘You’re going home.’ She smiled.

Janice fell into her arms, and cried, but then pulled back, and looked at London.

‘You didn’t find your little girl, did you?’

‘I’m afraid not.’ Tears welled up in her eyes. ‘But I will.’ She sniffed. ‘If it takes me a lifetime, we will find her.’ This time she looked up at Victor.

    ‘Yes we will.’

‘Come. Let’s go and help the others.’ She took Janice by the hand.

Her hand was so small and so fragile, and for a moment it felt like Paige.

In the distance, sirens were heard. They did the best they could to get the children out of the building. The doors that had been locked had to be busted down by the police.

‘I’ll just go and speak with the man in charge,’ said Victor.

He’d specifically asked for Detective Amaro, who he knew well. London had said he should make it happen, and so he had.

‘Victor!’ The detective walked towards him. ‘When I got the call, I didn’t expect this. I can’t believe this has been going on right under our noses.’

‘Yes well. This is an international matter now. The children in that warehouse are from all over the world.’

‘God dam it!’ The detective held his head. ‘I can’t believe this. How will I explain this?’

‘You’ll come up with something. It’s the very reason I called you. And you can’t mention a thing about my presence.’

‘Well, I’m going to have to say something.’

‘Well, I’m sure you’ll have enough dirt on them to come up with something. ‘I’m making you a hero, detective. You can take all the credit on this one.’ He patted the man’s back.

‘Yeah.’ The detective laughed lightly. ‘Tell me, what were you doing here anyway?’

‘Ah, now that I can’t tell you.’ He started to walk away. ‘Good luck with everything.’

‘Victor?’ He shouted. ‘Stay out of trouble.’

Victor laughed and headed back to the warehouse.

‘They’ll take over from here,’ he told London.

‘Okay, just give me a moment.’ She crouched down so she could face Janice who had her hand tightly in hers. ‘Honey, these nice policemen and women, are going to take you home to your mummy and daddy.’ She smiled.

‘I don’t want you to go.’

‘I don’t want to go either, but I have to find my little girl. You’re going to be okay, that I’m sure of now.’ She took Janice into her arms.

She pulled away and blew a kiss. Victor took
