      Squeals of childish joy jerked Paige out a deep and dreamless sleep. It was still dark outside. Way too early to get up. Stealing a look at the clock on her bedside table, all she could see was the bent spine of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the read-out-loud family book for December. Sleepily, she reached out a hand to move it, only to send it to the floor with a soft plop. She leaned over to pick it up, but the red, almost angry numbers of the clock glared back at her— 5:15 a.m. Another scream. The crazy, joint energy of the twins was on its way. She left the book where it fell.
